I found the remains of an old log cabin along the beach during a hike earlier this week. Not much left, but I thought it was pretty cool.

I also ran into this tree marked as a "Bearing Tree." I have never run into anything like this before. Anyone else seen these around? Fortunately I wasn't lost...cause there were no bearings on the marker.

hey that IS a pretty cool find!!!

I've never heard of a bearing tree before though...

Hey stingray welcome to the senile club (repeating oneself :))

Now that fireplace and chimney was built to last! Nice shots.

Idaho,

Looks like you're in the Southeast. I bet there are quite a few of those old cabin remains dotted all over Alaska. Lots headed out into the wilds, few made it.

Beautiful looking area.

I've never heard of a bearing tree either. Curious as to who put it there.

Charlie

p.s. I lived in fairbanks for 8 1/2 years. Now sweating it out in TN. :-)

Hey Charlie,

Yes, I am in Southeast (AKA: The Banana Belt...AKA: Rain Country). I went to college in Fairbanks for a couple of years...brrrrrr! Too cold for my blood.

I know where a turn of the (twentieth) century gold mine is. I will get down there to take some pictures next summer.

ok, now go back and build a SMALL fire to slowly dry out the stove., set up a tarp and take some pics!

History is cool. See if you can find out who lived there and when and then let us know!

That is really cool!

Did you have a chance to look around closely for anything worthy of a find?

that's amazing! all the old homesteads i've seen, the fireplace and chimney are just a pile of rocks. that one's still standing!

Thanks for all the comments guys. Its always kinda nice to know that you aren't alone in appreciating some of the things you see. I was completely surprised to find that chimney in the middle of the forrest. I have found lots of old log cabins and stuff, but never an entire chimney. About a decade (or more) ago, I had a job locating squatters on federal land. That was pretty cool.

As far as looking for valuables, the forrest floor is so dense there is no way you could ever be very successful withouth a good metal detector, which I don't have.

Cheers!
