I have (oh, I guess) 25 or so surplus ammo cans -- .30 Cal; .50 Cal; 20MM; etc.. Today I was going through them, opening them up, cleaning them, and restacking them, in the corner of my shop. One of the .50 Cal cans I opened had a combo medium/fine India Sharpening Stone, a small firearms repair tool set, some Hoppes No. 9, some gun oil, 3-boxes of .22 LR (150 rnds), 1 box of .30-06 (20 rnds) and this knife. It is a Camillus. There was a film of oil on the bottom of the ammo can and that must be what soaked into and discolored the sheath.

I had not forgotten I had this knife -- I just had not thought of it in years. Ok, ok, I forgot I had the darn thing. The last time I remember seeing this knife and the ammo can and the ammo can's contents is sometime around 1992. I have no clue as to when I got it and I have a couple more of the darn things in my fixed blade knife box.

A lot of people think these knives are junk but for a truck knife (which this one was) or tool knife, etc. these make pretty sturdy knives. Back in the day when I was in the Boy Scouts in the 1950s, many of us used these knives for camping, etc.. Military surplus ruled in those days. Surplus stores had these knives and K-Bar knives in busshel baskets on the floors for $3.00 -- some less, some more. Pup-tent halves were .50¢ each with the pup-tent poles thrown in for free -- all kinds of surplus was availabe so soon after WWII.

Anyway, I've now got the bug to start cleaning out more stuff. I've got some boxex out there that haven't been opened since the 1960s. No telling what I'll find in them.

I have one that looks very similar, it belonged to either my dad or my grandpa, it looks like its from the 50's or 60's. I don't think its a Camillus, i believe it has "Japan" on the bottom of the guard. haha I'm gonna have to pull it out and take another look at it now, great post.

you know ive always wished i had a collection of something that i could go through and find little 'prizes' your very lucky and those really are great beater knives

ya know brets-ftw, ya just never know what ya got. Look around your place. You'll never know what's in that box unless you open it.

Great find! I remember buying one of these from the PX for $30 years ago.

Nice find man! If you have a surplus, I'd be glad to use one for you. :D
