Cool Knife Story

Before you put it away in a display case, don't forget Renwax.

Oh, and bquinlan, I've got dad's pocket knife, his Bible, and his sliderule.

Thats really nice Mark!!!
I remember my grandmother gave me my grandfathers pocket knife when I was 4 years old (1973). I had it for three days, whittling on her back porch steps. Unfortunatley I lost it and never saw it again.

Make sure your son knows to take good care of it!!!

Great story Mark!!! The Lord bless you and yours!!!!

sincerely,
John

I would not clean it or sharpen it. I would leave it just the way it is.
After all it's a keepsake not a user.

Not sure that his grand father wanted to give a "keepsake". He used it for 50 years, and I bet he would hate to think the knife is just sitting there in a case. I know if I ever give one of my knives to my child or grandchild, I would expect him/her to use it. As far as a 7y/o with it, I don't think he can appreciate the significance of the knife, and would probably lose it.... I know I lost plenty of knives as a kid. Kids are kids after all. If you are going to actually let your son use it, do him a favor and sharpen it. A dull knife is a dangerous knife.

JMHO.

The knife is irreplaceable. Oh, if you rooted around on eBay, you might find another one of the same model... but it would never be the one that granddad carried for 50 years.

I feel better knowing I'm not the only one with a legacy sliderule. :)

I also have my grandfather's pocket New Testament. He was a Methodist minister and he carried it with him every day for more than forty years.
