For a while I've been wishing for a smaller, lighter alternative to my standard tripod that I use for taking photos around the house or out of a heavy pack. Something I could use on dayhikes or whatever. Then I remembered the gorillapod which is a really cool device that I had played with in stores before.
I stopped in at the local camera shop (which is going out of business
) and grabbed one. I accidentally bought a knock-off, made by Case Logic. It is basically the same thing, but I think the standard Gorillapod is slightly larger.
I love this thing. Mine (I don't know if the real deal also features this) has a neat little tripod attachment that is easily detached from the unit, so that I can store my camera in its case, then whip it out and have it on the tripod in seconds, then have everything back in my pack in another few seconds. Really cool.
On top of that, this tripod is light and small, and packs really well. It also works as advertised great! If you are looking for a small, light tripod for taking shots of nature (or even macro shots of gear!) this just might be what you are looking for.
