As a novice/hobbyist knifemaker I often struggle with technique issues that the more experienced out there have solved ages ago ( and, perhaps, long since forgotten ). Part of the challenge I suppose.

Just the same I enjoy discovering, and making, tools that ease the job along. I'm sure that everyone reading this has something they cherish like this. I'd like to see those goodies shared................

One of mine is an ergonomic file handle:

These are made by www.waltontools.com/

I stumbled across the couple I own on a sale/closeout table years ago at http://www.berlandtools.com/ (They claim that if they don't have you don't need it but that's a lie. I haven't found the willing woman department there, although it may be hidden from married men.), fun place, Berland's.

I'd like to see other people's cool tools ( not to be confused with www.kk.org/cooltools/ which is a fun place also ).

I like to wear gloves when I grind (or should I say practice grinding?) but I hate the heavy, STIFF, split leather, work gloves commonly used. These work a LOT better for me. They have 2 temperature models, 450 and 600. I have the 450 and they offer a lot of protection. Not cheap but worth it to me. If I were a smith I'd have to consider the higher (600) temp model.

Just a warning my friend, gloves and machinery don't mix. After almost 40 years of metalwork, I have seen my share of injuries from wearing gloves. You may scrape a knuckle or two without but its nothing to getting a glove caught in a spinning belt. The last one I saw was a co-worker getting pulled into a mill because his glove got caught. He won't wear gloves again, but at least he can still use two gloves. The same goes for jewelery and loose clothes.Anyways just be safe.Dave:)

Thanks I don't wear them often but occasionally I need to and these give more feel, coupled with more heat resistance then any others I've encountered. Expensive but worth it to me.

I promise to be very, very careful.

Thanks again................

yea ditto DC.. Im nervous with gloves.. you also lose 'feel' of the workpiece, so I only use em when I'm good and far from the wildly rotating bits!

Nice idea on the file handle.. I cant remember ever NOT getting thumbcramps while filing with normal handles.

My little trick is a grinder jig, which worked out better than I hoped: http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa99/langchop/jigop.jpg When I get more experienced I will probably forego the jig though, but for now its useful.
