"Cooling collar bandanna"?

Could work.

Wet a regular bandanna, roll it up, and tie it around your head. By cooling forehead, temples, and the back of your head (and neck), you will definitely cool yourself nicely. Or just soak your ten-gallon hat and put it on! :)

I have them and used them alot. They work realy realy good in dry weather. If the humidity is very high they would not work as good. I drove across the death valley in the summer time and it felt like having a bag of ice on your neck. Let me tell you that was a life saver. I also use the vest that i wear under the perforated leather motorcycle jacket. I used it in over 90deg temp and it felt as if i had my own A/C under the jacket.. Yes i would highly recommened them. Just remember they work much better in dry heat and you want moving air around it. I got my from a diffrent outfit but the idea is same. Oh a bandana would last all day long, a vest riding a motorcycle at speed would last for a few hours. When i took the vest off my body was cold to the touch. That was riding in over 90deg temp.

interesting idea. Back when I worked outdoors in California summers, I would turn a t shirt into a shemagh type deal, wet it, and wear it. The cooling effect didn't last long without having to rewet it, though.

Just use a regular bandanna they are cheaper and offer many alternate uses. put an ice cube or 3 in it then roll it around.

I've used something similar to that before. It worked rather well, until i let it sit in water too long (a few day), and all the little gel thing inside pretty much exploded.

Thanks guys! I believe these folks are traveling west for their outdoor adventure, so the humidity should not be an issue. I'll let them know!

When I was in Scouts, my leader had a bunch of those cool bands. His wife owned a seweing business and was contracted to make a bunch of them. We got a bunch of "factory seconds". The corners weren't perfect points, etc. They were nice when they were fresh from the cooler or water but they warmed up fast.

Like someone mentioned above, there are a lot of products like that for motorcycling (bandanas, vests). They work for riding, I don't know about activities with less airflow for the evaporative cooling effect.

I've used something similar, they should stay cooler longer than a bandanna and the price should not break the bank.

It absorbs a lot of water. That makes it heavy and I find a regular bandanna more comfortable, but it will stay wet and keep cooling you off a lot longer than a regular bandanna -- a couple of days at least.

i found that sometimes if the bandana is not cold enough on a hike. I take it off and spin it above my head for a few sec. when you put it back on its much colder. I meet a girl hiking the sierras, i gave her one of the bandanas for her thru hike. She left me a msg later on that it was one of the best things in heat at the high elevations. She would dip it in a cold creek for 2-3 min and it would keep her cool all day long.

They do work well when it's hot and dry. Several years ago I bought a can of the crystals to use for starting vegetable seeds. I had leftovers, so I took some bandanas to the sewing machine and made several of those cooling bandanas for my dad.

A little trial and error came up with a bandana that had 3 or 4 half inch diameter tubes running the length of the bandana collar. Kept the crystals distributed nicely, and the collar flat around your neck. The crystals are cheap enough that you can make them for everyone, AND put them in your starter trays.

i used something like it in iraq and it was a life saver. man i loved it. it wasn't what was pictured but alot like it. we also used bandana's and they worked great also.

another little trick i learned over there was to take water bottles full of water and put them in a sock wool or wool biproduct preferably and soak the sock with water and leave it in the shade hanging up and in about 10 mins with a breeze you would have very nice cool water, a lot of times there wasn't any shade and it worked so same principle. ahhh the little things

I think I used them before...Anyway, yes they are good. Usually not expensive at all and very comfortable to wear when it's warm.

G'day Spooky

Why bother, when a wet cotton cloth is cheaper and works better in humid conditions :D

I have them and used them alot. They work realy realy good in dry weather. If the humidity is very high they would not work as good.
Here's a little trick you can do with a wet cotton cloth in humid weather that enables it to still work. Wet the cloth and wave / fan it through the air. It makes the cloth a lot cooler than simply wetting it

Kind regards
Mick

My brother uses a product like that for motorcycling. He says it works like a champ.
