I bought myself a coote today. Now I need a motor. They gave some suggestions from surplus center. A TEFC 1hp or a TEFC 1 1/2 Hp. Is that 1/2 Hp worth 100 bucks. The 1hp is 200 and the 1 1/2hp is 315. I got the 1750 with step pulleys.

I got the 1 1/2 hp motor that he recommended, Glad I did. You could probably get by with 1 hp but I would say get the 1 1/2.

I have the 1.5 but you can get them pretty cheap at harbor freight, they had a sale so I bought two about 5 years ago (thinking it would not last) and still have one in a box. The 1 hp will work, but I get the 1.5 pretty hot some times if I am in a rush.

With a 1 HP motor, you can stop the motor if you get on it when grinding on the platten. When grinding on the wheel, it is harder to bog down but still possible. I would def go with the 1 1/2 HP. If you could go with 230V, I would. Then you could go with a 2HP... Bill S.'s link has a 2hp 230V TEFC for $120. Only draw back would be the 3650 RPM, but you could get around that with the step pullies that you have.

BTW, I had a Coote and was pretty happy with it.

I have the 1hp. It works, I think I would get the 1.5 if you could. In the words of Tim Allen, MORE POWER!!!

When it comes to grinding, bigger is better, 2 or 3 horse at the least, you got a pro grinder now, you dont want it to bog down like cheap import junk.

Thanks for the responses I bought a 1 1/2hp motor. I cant wait to get it in and all setup.
