Coote verses Suremak Grinder

I ordered all my wheels including a 10 inch contact wheel frolm Norm Coote. He is a pleasure to deal with, great prices, products and customer service.

I ended up building my own grinder, but if I had to buy one now it would probably be a Coote.

I live in Montreal, QC, Canada.

There's a guy in the province that makes a grinder similar to the Square Wheel, but wants $1000.00 for them, and I'm not cool with that.:

Muninn,
$1000.00 for a square wheel grinder is not that bad if it has all the attachments. Do you have is contact information?

Greetings,
I just got an email from Suremak and they will be sending me a picture of a modified version of their grinder tomorrow. I will ask if I can post the picture and design.

I paid for a Suremak grinder in Jan 2006. I was told 4-6 weeks for delivery.
It took 11 months. During that time I went through a long string of emails and phone calls with different reasons for the continued delay. I would be talking to one guy and being assured that it was coming soon, and then later that guy would have left the company and I would get a new guy etc etc.

By the time I got it I had moved to the USA and could have simply ordered a KMG. It came in a beaten up box with a few dings, a smashed platen liner, and a bent belt guard.

I got a new liner from Darren Ellis, and got it all set up.

Believe it or not after all that (and months of feeling ripped off) I really like the grinder.

Yep, Ed Storch is the guy I was talking about. I was at a knifemaking seminar at his farm a couple of years ago, and he had a bunch there for sale, they seemed nice, but don't quote me on that price, that's just the number that I seem to remember.

11 months seems like too long to wait for me, but I'm worried about how much grief it will be to get it across the border. Dennis, did you get shipping info as far as postage and things like that? I was on the Canada Post website trying to figure it out, but gave up. I'd be interested to know.

Rob

P.S. I think Ed still holds his weekend seminars in the summer, if anyone around there has a chance to go, it's a good time. When I was there, it was Brian Lyttle and Greg Lightfoot doing the demonstrations along with Ed. Lots of food, lots of visiting, good times.:thumbup:

Kelly, those pictures on your link really made me think again about the stress of getting a Coote here from the US. I'm staring to sound like a broken record with the bellyaching about the border, but I haven't had too many good experiences with shipping from down south, just a lot of red tape and delay. Maybe this would be a way around that, eh? Especially if the price works out the same. Decision, decisions...

Rob

You're worried about a delay at the border?!

What's the worst case for that?

I recommend the suremak only if you can meet them in person, pay for it, and take it with you. I would have happily driven many hours to do that vs what I did.

Hey Fellas. I'm from British Columbia and I've read this thread from start to finish. I've had my heart set on a KMG for sometime. Can anyone confirm weather or not Rob Frink will still ship to Canada. One way or another I plan on getting one. I just hope it will be the easiest and most direct way. Thanks to anyone who might be able to shed some light.
Thanx Art :confused:

FYI......
Knut, at suremak, has told me today that they have reduced their asking price for their grinder to $600.00 cnd each.

* 2"x72" belt grinder
* 8" contact wheel
* 1" finger wheel
* flat platen with glass backing
* Anodized
* Assembled

If you take in account the dollar exchange, duty, and shipping this is a great deal for all of us north of the boarder. Heck, with the dollar exchange, it is even better for our friends south too!

That's about $520 USD:eek: . A bargain, I would think, even after shipping.

I ordered my first grinder by phone on Wednesday from Knut at Suremak. The grinder was delivered on Saturday. I was very surprise on the shipping weight of the machine. The Suremak grinder weights 57 pounds. I was more surprised on the build quality. This machine is not cast aluminum, but made from precision CNC aluminum! All bolts are counter sunk and very thing fits nice and neat.

Setup was less then a couple minutes. The grinder was even shipped with a motor plate and mounting screws for the motor. I can not wait to throw some metal at it in soon. Crap…. Still a couple weeks away from completing my new shop.

I thought I would send everyone a couple pictures of the grinder. Total cost including shipping was $641.00 CND.

Hello, there. I'm wonderng is this Coote grinder price is in canadian dollars or US dollars???

The Coote is priced in USD. I just bought one with 10" wheel, small wheel attachment - four different small wheels, the knife rest, ceramic platen and the 9" disk including shipping by air - with insurance. $792US - about $910 CDN.

If you allow $50 for the 10" wheel vs 8"
another $50 for the 9" disc plate
$200 for the small wheel attachment with four wheels
and then take into account that the Coote included shipping, the Coote works out a bit cheaper. The basic Coote in 8" is only $434US - $499cdn - shipping is about the same for both - you pay GST either way and brokerage is $5.

To settle the discussion about materials, I just went over it with a magnet and most of it is aluminum, though it is VERY solid.

I chose the Coote for a few reasons. I like the versatility of the 9" disc plate which holds the contact wheel on. I'll use that a lot. I was concerned about the small wheel on the suremak. The angle that the belt exits the small wheel would make anything more that a shallow grind impossible. I like the wide variety of small wheels available for the Coote.

There are also things I like about the Suremak. The milled frame looks more professional - and adjustments are either by handwheel or a single allen key. The Coote needs a few allen wrenches and a 1/2" wrench.

Neither appears to have a way to adjust the gap between platen and workrest and I consider that a safety risk. Also, neither has any capacity to collect dust. Related to that, the lack of a housing makes the results of a broken belt much more pronounced. Both have the problem that flat grinds are done at a different height than hollow - and that is a comfort problem, necessitated by the idea of the contact wheel being the drive wheel.

Links to both can be found at http://www.suremak.com/grinder.html and http://www.cootebeltgrinder.com/index.html

Hope this helps some of those trying to choose.

Rob!
