I am getting ready to order my first grinder (Already got the DC motor and controller) can't decide between the Coote or Kalamazoo 2x72 grinder setup. They both look well made.
Has anyone used these belt driven units?

While I haven't worked with either, I have looked into the subject a bit, and I would have to say that the Coote is the better of the two units. My main reasoning behind this is the availability of readymade accessories for all the major operations you are likely to need, such as a small wheel option for finger grooves and inside curves, a tool rest on the flat platen AND on the contact wheel, and a disc adapter for flat grinding slabs and such.

These options may be available or easily made for the kalamazoo, but I haven't seen them.

Not to mention your purchase is supporting an american small business instead of some huge corporation or a chinese slave labor camp.

I've used the Coote for several months. No complaints. It tracked right out of the box. I'd ask for the 10" wheel as the initial setup if I had it to do again.

I have been using a Kalamazoo for the past two years. Tracking does leave a little to be desired.I add a 2"x1/4"x8" piece of O-1 to the platen to aid in the plunge cut. Also applied tape about 1/8" thick to the idler wheel to assist in the tracking. I run a 1 1/2 hp@ 3450 rpm ac with step pulleys, this allows small amount of speed control. also made a tool rest so I can hollow grind on the 8" contact wheel.

Thanks for your help guys. Looks like the Coote is my choice

I will let you know how it works out.

I've run a Coote off a 5hp motor 1725rpm & step pulleys....eats metal!
Buy the Coote! & get the 10" wheel!
