Im starting the process of becoming a baltimore city cop. I talked to a friend of a friend who is already a cop in baltimore and he said most guys carry 3 or 4 knives. So im trying to find info on what id be aloud to carry. So to make it short would I be aloud to carry fixed blade or auto knives?

Not sure what id carry yet just trying to find out what I can carry.

Thanks for any info

Eric

You should probably be asking current members of the department. I would suggest starting with simple, reliable styles like the Spyderco Endura or Kershaw R.A.M. or Benchmade Griptilian.

Congratulations on your choice of career!

Autos are illegal here, but I know that a lot the local law enforcement carry some pretty nice autos while on duty. They can not carry them off duty. I dont know of any of them that carry fixed and havent seen any. I always look to see which knives they have and which guns they are carrying. I wonder the LE in Baltimore carry so many knives? I could see one or two. But the more weapons you have the more you have to keep track of or keep away from a bad guy if you get into a tussle.

One of them had a $400 benchmade that was pretty much an automatic dagger, pretty cool looking, he also had a Kershaw Scallion. Steven Seagal carries a Kershaw Spec Bump or Offset on his show when he is on duty and one of the other guys had a Leek. If it was me I'd go for a spec or speed bump

Yea I'm going to a party this weekend where a couple of the guys will be so I'll get to ask some questions. I just don't wanna come off all rambo asking about knives and stuff when i first meet them. If conversation were to swing that way tho I'll certainly be asking. Thanks for the recommendation on knives.

I was actually surprised when he said such a high number as well. Being a knife guy tho i was happy as i usually carry 2 knives now and think adding a last ditch selfdefense knife to the mix might not be a bad idea. Thanks for the info

As a fomer NYC LEO, I carried a thin small lock back in my pants front ammo pocket and a leather man on my gun belt. The leatherman was used the most! The more visible weapons you have on you, the more you have to protect when you are in a fight, and you will have a 1,000 fights to every one time you can even present the use of deadly force with in department guidelines.....

Yes my leatherman charge tti will be carried no matter how many knives I decide. I figured the "defensive" knife would see little to no use and I hope id never have to use it.

Thanks for the info

If I could only have one edged tool, it would definitely be my Leatherman. I carry mine in its original leather belt case, but I suppose that an Uncle Mike's (or similar) black nylon belt pouch would work very well with a duty belt. It has been on many fishing trips, exposed to fresh water, salt water and fish blood. Not a speck of rust after 9 years of hard use. Very versatile tool for a sportsman or LEO.

3 or 4 knives? What this guy more specific about the types of knives? Was he including emergency strap-cutters?
These LEOs in MD these days sure seem a bit overloaded with gear I've noticed. In MontCo may of the city cops (and a few county) have resorted to wearing their vests on the outside of their shirt so they can use pockets on it, as well as using thigh holsters.

I can say a popular "defensive" knife is the Ka-Bar TDI, carried for off-hand draw if someone's going for your sidearm (that was the idea anyway). Remember when it comes to defense, fixed blade is in action faster than anything else, even in auto.

The TDI seems like a good choice. I read that some officers carry them behind their mag pouches. It seems that it would be somewhat hidden from view and remain accessable.

i have never even heard of a cop using a knife for anything other than utility. i don't think they are allowed to just cut or stab you , unless they have lost their gun and it's do or die type stuff.

Every jurisdiction is different, every precinct is different, it depends on the mission, on the specific needs of that police department.

The only reason I would use a knife would be in a last ditch effort to save my own life. Your post is kinda unneeded. Thanks for the helpful info tho

Here are a couple of pictures I found of the TDI behind mag carriers

How about a Spyderco Perrin Street Beat? It carries well and works well as a general use knife or a defensive knife.

start with local and state laws, get a general idea of what is a prohibited item.

dept policy will, or should, dictate what may be carried and where/how.

i carry four knives on duty.

-a folder in each sap pocket
-little sak on one key ring
-another little sak type thing attached to my shop key

i am not permitted to carry a fixed blade on duty, but i don't know if i would anyway. the emerson kerambit in my support side sap pocket is faster to retrieve than any fixed blade i would think.

Local laws in the City of Baltimore prohibit individuals from carrying (and perhaps even possesing) autos. I am not sure if there is an exception mad e for LEOs but I think there may be. Let us know what you find please? Thanks and be safe in Charm City. -DT
