Copper filling in ZT 0777 spine jimping?

Hey all,

So my friend finally received his 0777 (which I originally had on preorder, but elected to sell it to him at cost). He's impressed with the knife, but after handling it and looking over, it seems that there is some copper filling in some of the jimping ridges - if I'm not mistaken. That's what he thinks it is.

Any advice? I told him that perhaps some gun solvents that remove copper fouling might do the trick, but I'm holding off on that just in case there is a better remedy.

Edit, update

That is really strange. I would suggest contacting ZT and send them this picture they'll probably tell you to send it in. They have excellent customer service so no worry.

I just see specks from the opposite orientation of the thin lighter layers of steel in the damascus on mine

My blur has a little abnormality too. It's not rust, unless it rusted at the factory, because it's always been there.

it comes from the wire EDM used to cut out the blades shape
I have this problem sometimes at work cutting some steels

It's defective. Send it to me and I'll gladly dispose of it... :friendly_wink:

I'd like to carefully inspect that issue for you. I will be able to recommend a solution after finalizing my thoughts. Send it over....quickly before it gets better.

I would probably just leave it, but if it really bothers your friend, maybe he can take some fine sandpaper and lightly try to rub it off.

Update, this is a clearer picture that shows that there's no rust - there is "beading."

I have that on a few of my CF Blurs and something the same or similar on a Les George. Not sure what it is but it isn't rust or anything I've much worried about. I'm curious what it is though.

It's copper - that fine jimping was cut by the wire EDM prior to the braze welding of the Vanax and the Damascus. It looks like a little of the copper brazing material flowed into the jimping during the brazing process. I will ask around, but I'm pretty sure that the only way to remove that would be with a tiny triangular needle file. Filing on it would make the steel bright silver in the jimping - remember, the dark color of the damascus comes from etching it in a solution if Ferric Chloride. If it was me, I would leave it alone.

It's all good. He's elected to leave it. I think it adds a bit more character and distinguishes it from the other 0777's out there.
