Copper filling in ZT 0777 spine jimping?

By the way, the term "copper filling" makes me think of some kind of delicious pastry.... just what I need late at night!

If I were to have paid a custom maker what you paid for that 0777 and it came to me like that I would be extremely disheartened and disappointed. Especially if there was as much hype and anticipation for it as there was/is for the 0777. It's almost like finding the perfect girl online only to find out that she photoshopped her unibrow when you finally meet her in person.

I would not have a problem with that, I have seen it before on composite blades. Every composite blade is a little different, it is just part of the process, it makes them unique.

Ah yes...nothing wakes you up in the morning that a boston copper cream pie. Sorry jim i couldn't resist. I really got a chuckle out of this.

It's copper - that fine jimping was cut by the wire EDM prior to the braze welding of the Vanax and the Damascus. It looks like a little of the copper brazing material flowed into the jimping during the brazing process. I will ask around, but I'm pretty sure that the only way to remove that would be with a tiny triangular needle file. Filing on it would make the steel bright silver in the jimping - remember, the dark color of the damascus comes from etching it in a solution if Ferric Chloride. If it was me, I would leave it alone.

Not trying to sound like a jerk, but It probably will anyways. But when Spending close to $500 on a knife Is that really acceptable?.......... If it was me I would expect KAI usa to use that needle file to get that stuff out of the jimping and then re etch the blade. I know it would be a PITA but hey, we arent talking about a skyline here. And you know how people can get even with those things. It would take some hand work, but I have done partial etches on blades to blend a boo boo and that was on the face of the blade. With this issue being on the spine you have better odds of making it less noticeable. Im not trying to stir the pot. I guess im just a perfectionist. But when dropping that kind of coin on a tool, isnt perfection what is really to be expected?

Sorry, but im gonna have to disagree here. 1 most composite blade Kai products dont even come close to the price point of the 0777. IMHO price point should have some effect on the fit and finish expected of a product. 2. Seeing composite blades with this issue doesnt mean that its a non issue. It simply means that this might be a problem that needs to be payed closer attention to by the people making the knives.

I think most people who really know me on this forum would all agree that I am a kershaw fan and have been for a long time. But even being the big fan that I am I dont feel that you should always walk on eggshells if a company makes a mistake. On the flip side there is also a certain tact that needs to be utilized when addressing concerns. But honestly I dont really think having welding material in the jimping of the blade on this or any knife is really acceptable over a certain price point. And with the cost of the 0777 it certain puts it over the hump. I think it would be pretty poor to just send this guy off with a "live with it or get rid of it" response. He dropped serious coin on what Kai has claimed as a flagship of their technological capabilities as a company. And as such I think they have a responsibility to make sure this guys knife is everything all the other people received. And even if everyone elses knife had the copper in the jimping that wouldnt make it ok. Tough detents, sticky locks (that need to be broken in) and sharp jimping (grow hair where it counts) are all complaints that I find trivial and should be put into the recycle bin. But I would be lying if I said I would be happy paying almost $500 for that.

I don't think anyone said that he shouldn't contact the dealer he got it from if he is unhappy with it. Obviously with the limited numbers a replacement might be iffy. If he is unsuccessful there he can always contact ZT.

Well my friend is content with it. It's his first grail knife, and I didn't mind giving up my preorder to get it to him. Regardless I know ZT will take care of their customers, so I'm sure there are possibilities if he wants that flaw corrected.
