Copper pin material?

Hopefully a simple question:

-What do you use for copper pin material (preferably 1/8"), and where do you get it?

I poked around in the plumbing section at Lowes a couple of times, but found only copper tubing. I've also checked some of the knife making supply houses.

I thought about using a piece of copper wire, but what I've been able to scrounge is not large enough, and I would also need to figure out an easy way to straighten it.

Thanks in advance!

Hobby Lobby carries some copper rod.I've found it there in 1/6th and 3/32nds.Also try K&S Enginnering online, don't know the exact web adress but you can Google. The sell all different types of small tubing and rod for model building and things such as that.

Here is a trick for when you find some copper wire you want to make pins out of. Cut yourself a section a few feet long...clamp one end in a vise.....take the other end and chuck it up in a drill, a cordless should work just fine for 1/8"....chuck it tight.... Now pull on your drill a little and spin it a few times in one direction then reverse the drill and spin the other way a few times. Do that a few times till it's spun straight. The spinning also work hardens the copper.
Good luck.

I found several brass brazzing rod with out flux at the tool crib but any hardware supply shop that has welding rod will most likely have copper too.Oh ya 1/8 brass rod 3ft was 1 dollar i also went to the plumbing department and got a ft of brass 1/4 inch tube for thongs works good like 1 dollar a ft.

Look in the hardware section of Ace Hardware, Lowes or Home Depot. They will have various sizes of round metal ware. I also use Fastenal if you have one in your area.

The ace hardware near my house carries brass, copper, aluminum, and stainless rod up to 1/4".

You might consider looking at smaller hardware stores in addition to hobby shops if you don't want to buy online.

Do you mean the area where they have racks/bins of steel of various shapes and sizes? If so, they have steel, brass, and aluminum but no copper.

If you mean the small drawers with miscellaneous 'stuff', I've looked at them a few times with knife supplies in mind but I don't recall seeing copper there (I was not looking for it at the time, however.)

There is an ACE that's not all that close that was the only one locally who carried brass tubing when I was looking for it, so I'll give them a try. Thanks for the reminder.

I called the local hobby shop, and they said they don't have any copper.

They should have copper. The best of the three in my area is Ace Hardware. It is in the area that they sell plate, bar, angle and tube mild steel. There is usually a rack that contains all this stuff and the smaller round is in with it.

Where in Hobby Lobby did you find it. I was in one last weekend and asked someone that worked there if they had any and was told no. Thanks.

It will probably vary from store to store. In the one I visit they have some in the area where the model making stuff is, and some more I think in the clock making area.Another source could be hobby stores where they sell model trains, radio controled cars, ect... Usually in those stores will be a K&S Enginnering display of all sorts of tubing and rod stock.

Well, I went to the ACE today which seems to have stuff that none of the other stores around here have. They had the K&S Engineering displays, but only small copper tubing, no copper rod. The sales guy showed me a lifetime supply of copper rod in the form of brazing rod for only $5, which I brought home, but after reading this on the company's site, it appears to be only copper coated.

Looks like I'm going to have to order some online someplace. Thanks again to all for their tips and suggestions.
