Just throw some copper shavings into a new batch of etching solution. Let it dissolve then then put your damascus in and the copper will start bonding to the 15n20... or whatever has nickel in it. I did a test and the copper does not stick to 1095, rubs right off. You'll want to play with your timings and perhaps going from clean etching solution to the copper one, but don't go backwards else you'll start getting copper into what should be your clean etching solution.
