Cord Wrap Problem

I am trying to cord wrap (for the first time) a knife which has a curved handle. As you can imagine, this makes things slightly difficult, especially for a newb. The handle is at its thinnest in the middle, and gets wider towards both ends. I have tried several techniques, inlcuding starting in the middle and wrapping towards one end, then repeating for the other end. However the wrap is a bit on the loose side, which doesn't seem ideal. Does anyone have any suggestions, such as using some grip tape intended for squash racquets, or something similar, to wrap the handle before applying the cord?
