Cord wrap v. micarta scales on your Izula

The scales are pretty good. Have had them on my Izula for almost a year and love them.

Never even considered the cord wrap as I use mine for fishing, hunting, food prep, and at work (farm stuff, generally). The cord would need to be changed almost daily with my use.

I've tried multiple wrap styles on my Izula but I always find myself unwrapping it and going back to the scales. They fit my hand to damn well to not have them on.

Scales on an Izula definitely make it easier to handle as opposed to a wrap, but it doesn't make much of a difference on such a small knife.

You can devise some paracord wraps that are hefty enough to come close to scales as well.

I had a wrap but switched to the handle scales, because I didn't feel the wrap filled my hands like I wanted it to. If it didn't feel so much better, I wouldn't use the scales though, because I thought my wrap looked about 10 times cooler (ACU on OD green Izula).

Definitely buy the scales. They make the knife feel so much better in the hand. I wouldn't use mine as much as I do if it didn't have the scales. They fill out the middle of your hand well and makes it feel like you have a better grip.

Looks like the majority of you say to go with scales. I guess I'll give 'em a shot. I also like the idea of wrapping the scales also. That will really add some bulk to the handle.

The scales really do make a big difference....at least to me. You might have to start your wrap from the circle and go down and back if you want to re-tie at the end. They have a filler piece behind the micarta that goes in the empty handle - I don't think you could pre-thread the body part without cutting out or manipulating the filler pieces.

Make sure to take pictures if you try it out, I'd like to see it. Maybe taking out the inner cords would make it easier to go up then back without it becoming too big.

I have the paracord wrapped on mine. I have not tried the scales yet, becasue I think it's just another project ( which we all love projects) to put a new wrap on. I'm also thinking of getting a esee 4 so I don't think I will need the scales for my Izula. The one addition an Izula needs is a custom sheath that was my priority when I first got mine.

Just got my Izzy today and I ordered the scales along with it. I really like the feel of the knife with the scales. It fills my hand much more effectively.

+1 for scales if you use the knife for periods of time its alot more comfortable, one of my neckers is corded and it is slimmer to fit in my pocket.

MyWife- (that sounds so wrong...)
Sorry I'm slow on the response - my internet access is sporadic at best.

The "JoeyB" wrap compared to the scales: The wrap has three advantages to me:
1) It makes the handle thicker - top to bottom - which fits my hand better. That's a distinct advantage over the scales which only widen the handle a bit.
2) That part of the hand at the base of the fingers where calluses build up - whatever it's called - fits perfectly in the "thin" part of the wrap.
3) I can wrap the hole in the end and keep the full length of the handle same thickness. I guess you could do that with with the scales on, too, but...

Anyway, if you have this wrap and it's not working for you, give the scales a try. Or try a thicker cord, or double wrap.

for 'heavy use' the more grip the better..!! I've tried heavy use w/ one of my neck knives and it wasn't fun....

for a wrap I think the strider wrap is by FAR the most comfortable...

other then that, scales..

Oddly enough, I actually like my Izzy without anything. I have it wrapped now, but will be taking it off soon. I only wrapped it for the winter so I could get a bit of cord towards the hole to make it easier to grip with gloves.

don't really like how small the knife handle feels in my hand with the cord, so i ordered the scales, and am impatiently waiting for them.

I think I prefer my Izula naked.

I like the feel of cord-wrapped but for some reason I just keep going back to the naked Izula.

I ordered the scales a few weeks ago, but I didn't have the right allen wrench size to put them on so I'm waiting for the allen wrench set I ordered to get here. Maybe I'll love the scales to pieces when I can actually get them on.

If you're going to use the Izula for carving wood (trap parts, etc.), get the scales. Even wrapped, I find the handle digs into my hand when applying pressure to a wood cut. I just received my scales a few days ago and it makes a huge difference.

I also like the 'permanence' (not having to clean gunk off the 550) of the micarta scales, although I do like the look of some of the wrapped Izulas.
