A while back there was a link to Steve Johnson's cork belt finishing process. Does anyone still know if it is active and what it might be? Thanks.

Not sure if the thread is still active but you could try Steve's forum on the knifenetwork forum (if I am allowed to mention it on this forum). I apologize to the mod's if that was a no no.

I adopted his process at leat a year ago and it works great. To give you a run down for cork belts you need 400, 600, and 800 grit cork belts. Run each one on the grinder using a piece of metal to wear the belt down, do this for each belt for 10 minutes to break it in. Also remember to do the edges of the belt to relax the backing of the belt to do your plunge lines.

I can't remember what types of belts Steve uses but I think he starts at a 60grit belt then goes to a 400grit then to the cork belts. I have modified it a bit to use more grits. I still hog out alot of steel with 36 grit ceramics, then use a 60 grit, then an A100 (220 grit Trizac) to do the plunge lines, then A45 (400 grit Trizac), then the cork belts.

My way definitely takes me longer than his way but it is working for me.

Hope that helps.

Sean

What compounds are you using on each belt? I have grey(black), green, red and white. Thanks for your reply. I don't think it is still on his forum. I tried searching and no luck.

I use a mix of black and Green on the 4oo Cork, Green RCH on the 600 cork, and RCH White on the 800. I have added one additional step. Pure Green Chrome ( Very dark, messy stuff, but without any grit) is put on a non grit polyester belt. They are made for polishing. Then to the buffer. Mike
