Corkum First Strike

What is very weird about that CRKT Lightfoot M1 is that from several places now I have heard that the uneven edge bevels are -intentional-.

It is supposed to be an asymmetrical grind.

Uhhhhh....

That's a half-assed chisel edge... or very crappy sharpening at the factory.

I returned my M1... bad lock, terrible edge bevel and uneven grinds (not just the edge), non-functioning flipper, and a liner system that bows and flexes whenever you use the flipper or put pressure on the spine. No thanks.

A shame... CRKT used to have high standards for their import OEM companies -- seems like they've fallen recently.

>> Also, very weirdly enough, the CRKT copy says that the "convex zero edge" is called "appleseed" style... I always thought the appleseed hamaguri (sp?) is a combination of a hollow grind along the main edge and the flat ground tip?

I don't own the fixed blade Corkum and after reading the reviews and comments here probably won't. I do own the M1 and for under 50 bucks it is a very solid knife. Mine was razor sharp out of the box, cost 43 bucks plus shipping and locks up like the proverbial bank vault. Grinds were all even as heck and fit and finish par excellance on the little devil. It cuts way bigger than the size of the blade would indicate too. I have been edc'ing it for 3 wks now and the only complaint I have is the mako flipper gizmo. Just don't like it but you seem to need it on there as the blade stops don't work that great for opening the blade. The liner lock hits just left of center unless you really snap it open hard and then it hits center and has stayed there for hundreds of hard wrist flicks to open it. I like it so much I am going to have custom scales put on instead of the dimpled zytel that are on it now. I wrote a mini review of it on www.tacticalknives.com. Keep'em sharp

I don't own any CRKT knives, and after reading this fiasco, I probably never will. I have a few Kershaws that I like, and if I need a cheap knife, I'll stick with one of them. For what the First Strike costs, I'll take my Spyderco Moran. Not as cool, but at least it's sharp.

I've owned several custom Corkums. There not very sharp when they come straight from the maker either. I don't think Steve Corkum is a big fan of making his knives razor sharp.

I have Japanese tactical fixed blades from many custom makers. I have found that a lot of custom makers do not put a razor sharp edge on their blades.
If you want a super sharp edge you need a knife from David Dempsey, Mike Snody, and RJ Martin.

I see no reason why a factory production Corkum should not have a sharp edge. Hell, the factory should charge $5 extra bucks for the knife and put it through one final sharpening process before they box it up to send out to their dealers.

Hello

I am a brand new member and i found this place when looking up this first strike knife.

im waiting for mine to ship from ebay and i think i should of researched before bidding :(

anyway i did some more research and came to this place which explained to me the whole convex edge and how to sharpen.

please tell if this is legit or not http://www.mhcable.com/~yocraft/sosak/convex.htm

Thank you in advance

Yes the sharpening web-site you linked seems to have all the right information, I found it quite useful actually; thanks!

Sad to say that I have examined 5 First Strikes and they all had a crappy edge. If only CKRT would but a better finishing grind (a zero grind would rock!) on this knife and not sell it as it is- which is pretty much a fancy butter knife. :grumpy:

I had New Graham order me one. I guess I'll see if it's improved any when I get it. I wish I had seen this thread! I was going to get another spyderco. :(

Actually not too bad, easily honed. Well see about the edge retention I guess. Maybe I got lucky?

I have received mine the same way, kinda dull...But, I guess the blade finish is meant to look that way, a understated beauty. The blade egde is sharpened all the way through indeneath the front handle binding, that is going to cause problems in the long run as the blade will cut it through... Ad for sharpening, this baby wasn't difficult at all, get yourself the Spyderco Tri Anglesharpmaker!!! This sharpener is simply the best, my First strike is now razor sharp and I love it. It's a great knife with a hidden persona.

I thought I was the only one. I got mine in a mall and figured it was dull because a lot of people looked at it, etc., but I haven't been able to put an edge on it yet!

I just got rid of Corkum FS.Got it NIB about a month ago and it was nothing more than a fancy butter knife. Its a very nice looking knife in fact I figured since its usless as a weapon I would display it on my desk but the more I looked at it the madder I got so I traded it.Ive owned a couple CRKT folders in the past which were fine so its very disheartening.Stick with Spyderco and Kershaw, for the money you cant go wrong.
