Corned Beef Hash

Are there any good brands of canned corned beef hash out there? I hadn't had it for a long time. My Mom used to make it in her diner from leftovers, but I don't ever have those leftovers, so I won't be making it from scratch very often. I'll probably break down and do a corned beer and potatoes and then make hash, but it will be a rare event.

My son had some at his buddy's house, and is now crazy for it, so I'm looking for a decent brand.

No idea. My wife makes corned beef and cabbage, and dang... great stuff.

Hormel, I usally go with the less fat version. It doesn't even get close to home made, but when your camping, it makes a great stick to your ribs breakfast.

That's one thing I'm trying to get my wife to try for breakfast one morning. I love the stuff! She's a little scared to try it as her mother's is world-famous. If it turns out half as good as her mom's, i'll be a happy little piggy. I've almost got her talked into it. We have a deal where I make breakfast (instant oatmeal, toast, maybe an egg or something) through the week so that she can get out the door on time for work, and in return she makes me massive breakfasts on the weekends before I have to head to the office. Fair trade:D

She did do a corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick's Day, but i was a little under the weather that evening and not really feeling it. I have to be in a cabbage mood to enjoy it;)

As far as I know, she made everything from scratch, so I don't know what a good canned brand would be. I tend to steer us away from canned food as it is chalked full of sodium:barf: Hey, if we eat right at 25, then we'll probably be eating right at 50, right?:D

I'd like to try making it.

I put a Polish sausage in a crock pot with some cabbage, carrots and potatos yesterday. I ate two massive plate-fulls. The sausage is a alternative to corned beef. The oils spread over everything. I like it.

Mom also used to make "red flannel" hash. You use beets in addition to the potatoes and other stuff. Makes it a sweeter hash. I think she used to chop up the beets more finely because she only wanted the beets to add to the flavor and color, not to be big chunks. MMMMMMMM. Wish Mom still had the restaurant open.

I made a great beef stew this weekend (if I do say so myself). My wife made a chicken tortilla casserole and a meatloaf. We did it so we had some to freeze, and eat for the week without cooking. Instead, I've been stuffing myself daily. :o

I'm enjoying cooking more in my old age than when young.

My wife suspects I could be a chef if I tried and my sons prefer my food to hers. I'll never let her know, of course, if I can really cook or not; because then I'd have to do it all the time instead of for fun and life.

I love to cook, but it has to be to create. I can do without the boring box dinners. Sure, I ate a ton of them when i lived by myself, but what was the point of fresh veggies and meats for one slob of a guy living on his own with just a ferret for company? Breakfast is my favorite. I'm an early riser and nothing gets me off to a great start than getting up to fry or scramble some eggs, brown some ham with a little brown sugar, and start a pot of coffee so stong the spoon stands up in your mug.

now, I can't even touch my wife's pancakes. I have no idea how she makes them other than adding a bit of club soda to the batter to give them a fluffy/fizzy quality. She comes from a family of people who like to cook. Her brother even has a degree in cullnary (sp?) arts. We'll put it this way. Her father has always been a large man for the entire 12 years I've known him. I saw a picture of him on his wedding day with mom-in-law. 6'2 145lbs! Within two years, his mother-in-law and wife had him pushing 210:D
I'm working on my belly-laugh, because someday I'm sure I'll have a belly to sport if my wife has anything to do with it;)

Mary Kitchen is the brand we pickup. It's pretty good. I've had the Hormel but it tasted different. Went back to the other.

I was raised on this stuff. One can's as good as another as far as I'm concerned. I generally buy whatever's least expensive at the moment.

I heat mine in a pan until it's hot and slightly brown, then stir in a fried egg or two and catsup. It seems a bit weird now that I think about it but that's the way it was served to me as a child. Some habits die hard. I add diced onions and/or jalapenos if I'm feeling froggy but it seems almost like I'm betraying a sacred trust when I do.

Tell ya what, though...over the last few weeks, chorizo has assumed the dominant position in the Rishar Breakfast Meat Hierarchy. (And yes, I know what's in it.) I wish I'd known about this stuff a few years ago.

Darn; if you like corned beef n hash out of a can I'm almost afraid to ask where you buy Chorizo? It is good in eggs.

Mary Kitchen is good but if you want to shortcut and try to make your own use a canned corned beef and just add potatoes (Frozen hash browns work well) and onions if you like.

If anyone has a family recipe (for the cb hash) they'd like to share, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the excellent suggestion.

I'm not a snob when it cmes to food, and cheap doesn't automatically mean bad.....I too have had great satisfaction from Mary Kitchen Corned Beef Hash and also their Roast Beef Hash. Just slab off approx 1/3 can of either, warm it up (its already fully cooked) and top with two eggs over easy.....total time about 3 minutes. The ONLY down side is the "grams fat" and cholesterol, but if you're not worrying about that, rock on! :D :D

I used to be able to buy a dozen tamales in the mexican section of San Bernardino for 7 bucks. I was the only white guy in there, looking for habaneros and hot sauce and what not. No one ever bothered me.

I've had 4 dollar tamales in good restaurants that were not nearly as good.

There are no good tamales in Montana.
