Corrosion On Carbon Steel

Hey, a while back somebody asked about what we did to prevent corrosion on carbon blades.

I took this blade on a 3 day 2 night trip in the wilderness. The only thing I did to it was wipe it off and once or twice I rinsed it off. Also cut acid stuff like a watermelon and a tomato since we had a picnic before and after.

Used it a lot for zip stove wood too and it was still shaving

Here it is after I came home and took a tiny bit of steel wool and rubbed the blade and then mineral oil. There's a few spots near the handle but mostly clean with minimal effort:thumbup: The flecks on the blade are little peices of leather from inside the sheath that stuck to the oil on the blade.

I usually bring a tiny bit of steel wool with me. I did on this one but just for curiosity sake I'd just do the minimum and see what I ended up with.

for whatever reason, on mora triflex, mineral oil will encourage rusting. i dont know why, but before a trip out of town i oiled all of my knives and about a week later when i got back, my mora was sufficiently rust coated. luckily, it is just a mora. i took some sand paper to it and it is mostly back to normal.

Nice! I have a Green River that needs that treatment..

I have used steel wool before but had not though of using mineral oil as well. Thanks for the neat idea!

That's pretty much what I do with axes and the #2, although I don't use mineral oil. It keeps them happy between sharpenings, and then the wet-n-dry ablates everything anyway.

I've always used 400 grit paper on my axes and knives to clean them up. Makes a nice satin finish.

For some reason, some of my Mora knives come up with stains from some leather sheath. I don't know if I heed to treat the leather with something before i make a sheath or what. Only seem to happen with the carbon Mora's and not even all of them.
