For most of you guys who have made knives with 10XX steels, what do you do afterwards as a simple and non expensive treatment to prevent rusting?... would regular cleaning and oiling be sufficient or would it still rust.... this Q is particularly directed at those living in coastal areas. Thanks

I use what Ed Caffery reccomends. Mothers California Gold Carnauba Cleaner Wax found in most automotive sections.

I've been using carbon steel knives since I was 5 years old (40 years) and making carbon steel knives for 25 years. Most of these years spent around the gulf coast of north Florida, commercial fishing. Nerver had one rust, they turn dark with a nice patina but no rust.

Just wipe the blade off when finished and wash with soap after use around saltwater. A little oil will help but I rarely oil my blades.

Both suggestions are good, if you plan to just put the knife away or rarely use it I would oil or wax it. Buffing can also help keep the rust out.

I think Paste wax is good for a lot of applications, particularly damascus.
I've recently switched to Bri-Wax, a British product. It's a nice hard wax that wears well, unlike most of the softer paste waxes.

Cool.. thanks guys. I used to live in Durban, which is supposedly one of the cities with most corrosive atmospheres. Fortunately I am now inland.

Does phosphating make the surface very dull and irregular, or can it sometimes look quite decent? I saw in the shops this morning some phosphorus acid sold under a name of "Deoxidene"... anyone ever heard of it?

I am glad to hear most of you dont feel that much treatment needs to be done :D

Thanks

"Deoxidene"... Is only a rust remover once you use it the metal will rust very quickly unless you oil or wax the blade.
We use it all the time on aircraft parts that are going to be repainted.

Your from South Africa? Beautiful country. For my carbon knives I just put a touch of oil on them when I'm done using them and I don't ever have a problem with rust. When you are using it on a regular basis, like say a camping trip, just be sure to dry it good after each use, and when you aren't going to be using it for a while, like when you get back from camping and it won't get used until next time, put some oil on it.

When I go camping it also includes lots of fishing(freshwater) and I use a carbon mora to clean all my fish and I have not once seen a spot of rust on it. Just dry it good and put oil on it if it won't be used for more than a couple of days.

The knife I made my son is getting a really nice blue patina from general use - but mostly cutting apples. An apple a day.....

For oiling work knives I often just give a spray with remoil, but I don't have a lot of trouble if I keep the knife clean

Yup Sting Im from SA.
Definitely sounds like i can just leave a nice untreated shine on my finished knife. Thanks guys for info on all your experiences. Much appreciated.
