Cosa Nostra.....

I was playing Counter Strike and I fell in love with the knife used. I looked it up and found out it was a Strider. I had already been given Moran's and Randall's, a Lake... A few others that I gave to my uncle when My grand father passed. I only kept the Puma seal hunter and my grandfather military knife. All others I had I didn't care for and I knew my uncle would appreciate them more. Too bad I didn't know their value but I'm still happy that I kept the ones that meant something to me. Being a poor kid I never bought anything till I started playing Poker and making some quick cash then came the buying binges... Last 3 years I did lots of buying and selling at a loss because I just wanted to hold customs and The $$ was free. Now, I'm awaiting my last custom I can see myself buying for a very long time.

I can't say when I first became interested in knives - just about as far back as I can remember I found them fascinating. Playing cowboys and indians as a kid I always wanted to be an indian with a tomohawk and a knife (spatula and plastic cake icing knife).

Bought a few factory knives in my late teens - Buck, Gerber, Smith & Wesson and the like.

In 1983 on a trip to Dallas with my Dad I came across a custom knife store in a shopping mall. That there was such a thing as custom knives blew my mind. That a store selling custom knives could be found in a shopping mall right alongside a JC Penney's blew it further. Welcome to Texas. :)

Bought a second knife from the same store a year later - a Warren Osborne interpretation of a Randall Model 1.

Started going to gun shows just to see knives. Found out that some seriously crazy dudes go to gun shows. :) But I looked over every knife I could get my hands on.

Found a few old copies of Blade Magazine and sent out about a bazillion envelopes stuffed with 2-3 dollar bills for copies of makers' catalogues - poured over those things for hours on end.

Found a dealer who sent out a monthly list of knives and bought one or two pieces. Somewhere in the late eighties - maybe 1990 - he called and said he had a knife he thought I might like by a maker I wouldn't have heard of. Said it was 'forged' - whatever that meant. Said he'd send it to me and if I didn't love it I could send it right back. It was Fisk Arkansas camp knife. I could hardly put it down.

I've bought a few forged blades since then.

The link above says a lot of it.

I didn't actually become a full time maker until 1976.
Mostly Bob Loveless, Harvey McBurnette, Jimmy Lile, and George Herron to blame for it. They all took me under their wing at one time or another.

First show, Birmingham Al. in 1976. I had a table between Harvey and Jimmy. I sold out at that show, and have ever since. I can't think of anything I would enjoy more than making Knives.
