Hey all. Im leaving for 31Bravo OSUT (combined BCT and Military Police schools) in January.

I was wondering how much it would cost to get someone to make me a custom combo field knife/bayonet that would afix to the M16/M4 weapons systems? I wanted to buy myself it as a graduation gift to myself when I do graduate. This is a purely hypothetical deal right now, but more than likily that I would like to follow though on it.

I will be developing a feature list over the next few days.

I need a steel that will hold an edge over heavy abuse. Fixed blade obviously, probably modified recurve (Think Benchmade Skirmish) on the primary edge, with a modified drop/spear point, (Can't remember the differences of them at the moment.) and with a sharpened half back edge, but with the lower back half of the blade flat so I can choke up and use fine control. Positive retention is a must. Don't want a real pretty steel, Id like to beat the hell outta this knife. (Bead blasted finish or some dark finish.) Primary edge needs to afix facing down.

Anyways, I might do a sketch of the idea...but cant guanrentee my art skills. I wouldn't be going as a combat arms if I could draw half decent. :D

Thanks a bunch guys, yall have never steered me wrong yet.

I'm retired military, infantry type, and what you need to consider is the fact that Uncle Sam will issue you a bayonet and he likes everything to be uniform. I doubt if you'll be allowed to furnish your own bayonet or stand inspections with it. I'd wait until you are assigned to a regular unit and then check on whether you can carry it.

From the many many people Ive talked to when they get deployed to the sandbox, (eg Iraq or A-stan) once you are over there, gear is fairly free as far as your choices. Your choice of knives, multitools, even vests and armor as per how flexable your CO is...or most attitudes is that they will use what works best for the mission until they are told otherwise.

You can buy the new USMC bayonet. I also agree with the gentlemen above wait til you get to your unit to see what is correct to carry.

Erm...Army. They don't make them as far as Im aware without the anchor on it. Bad juju to show up to your ARMY unit with a MARINE blade. :D

Might call for a blanket party or two.
