My wife walks around with an extraordinarily expensive diamond on her finger. In fact, if sold, one could buy a nice car with the proceeds. Yet, when I got it for her, and I hope this doesn't sound short-sighted, but I had no concern for resale value. I did it for love and that was that. I buy and use knives because I love to use them. I love using more than just looking. That is not to say that my preferences are better than someone else's who may have different preferences. You just have to decide what is right for you.
Whenever I can't decide, I try to weigh the costs and benefits on a piece of paper--left side benefits, right side costs. Assign values -10 to 10 for things like "I get to use it" or "Loss of 25% value" and then compare columns. Your answer, no matter how elusive it was originally, will be right at the bottom. Good luck!
