Cottonball and Vaseline (Alt)

I can tell you for a fact that cotton balls with Vaseline will start quick and burn longer. About a year ago at the Dayton Ohio gun & knife show, Steve (aka Critter) who is an instructor at Canterbury's survival school was in my booth and demonstrated the cotton ball/Vaseline fire starter method...I was almost sure we were going to get kicked out of the show. :D
btw: he carried these in plastic 35mm film canisters.

+1 for the film containers. That's what I use as well and they take up minimal space in your pack.

Check these things out http://www.ultimatesurvival.com. There called wetfire. I havent used them yet but look really cool on the video. They seem to cost around a dollar a cube here and there but they are reusable and burn when wet. A few of these little cubes should pack most anywhere. Has anyone tried these out?

Wetfire works well. Reminds me a lot of the old Trioxane tabs from military kits, but they don't degrade as fast in oxygen, and they're not as "toxic". They are pricey, but from the fires I've started, a little bit goes a long way, and they'll take a spark in just about any weather. Lighthound.com has them in stock and with a great price. Picked some extras up when I snagged some paracord a few days ago.
