Cougar attack on one of my favorite hikes !

The look on that dogs face was "Did you SEE the size of that cat!!" I am glad it turned out good for the dog. I bet he still has some nightmares about that kitty though.

That's scary. To think that you could be attacked by a cougar at any time  Take it easy on the trails, Pit.

Wow, pitdog You and the girls be careful. Say i think you need a really REALLY Big and of course freaking scary sharp knife to carry in that dangerous place.

I just happen to know a guy who can make you one;):D

You are probably right Bryan but even with the new one you made me I still keep grabbing the Woody model, it's easily my most used knife, it just feels enough knife for most my tasks yet doesn't weigh me down. I also love how easy it is to maintain razor sharp......did I mention how I love this knife, LOL !

I did mention to Mrs Pit how I'd maybe like a nice version with Stag/antler scales and a couple of very slight changes somewhere down the line, she said I'm nuts and that I've got way too many knives already !!!:(

That's a very lucky dog. Cougars will usually make very quick work out of dogs, even the big ones. My vet told me one of the problems with cougar attacks is that they often have rotting meat/lots of bacteria under their claws and in their mouths, so when they injure you, sepsis often kills you or the dog. Massive infection...

Glad it all turned out ok.

A German shepherd or pit bull that's in very good shape should be able to hold its own unless the cat gets a really good pounce attack from a tree, they are nearly the same size and I think two large dogs the cat wouldn't even attack.

I respectfully disagree

I have raised 5 German Shepherds from the age of 13(I"m 52) and they are not capable of fighting a Cougar and winning. As in making the Cougar run off and coming back to you---

Cougars weigh Males typically weigh 53 to 100 kilograms (115 to 220 pounds), averaging 62 kg (137 lb).

Pit Bulls will fight anything-PERIOD.I have hunted wild boar with a Knife and we used Pit Bulls to attack the Boar--they are FEARLESS.

But one on one with a Cougar--they are again--No match.

If I had to choose a dog to protect me from a Couger(also called a mountain lion, puma) it would be this Breed--as IT WAS BRED TO DO THAT

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogo_Argentino

But a dog(ANY DOG) would to me just be an early warning system to alert me to pull out a pistol(or in Pit's case-a knife-since he is not allowed to carry a handgun)

I still think my Jack Russell would be my best defence against a Cougar, Russells are very boney little buggers so there is a good chance they would get stuck in the Cougars throat and choke it to death !:D

Please--send one to my ex wife at once

:)

I would take a Dogo Argento and a Glock 27 and any cougar would get its ass bitten and blown away!

Enough to keep a guy doing a 360 scan now and then. Your positive and negative are your dogs. Best warning system around, but a cat would go for one of them before an adult male.

Dog VS Cougar is a bit like a knife in a gunfight. Bravery of the dog will lead to a brave death. Dogs have but one offensive weapon where cougars have 5. One mouth set with teath and 4 sets of sharp claws attached to powerful legs. Fighting a large cat is like juggling a running chainsaw. The dogs best role is to alert the owner and try to intimidate the cat into choosing another fight.- much the same as in home defense.

Dogs ARE great at intimidation. I have watched a 15lb wire haired terrier turn and run a large Black Angus bull. The frustration and racket was just not worth the fight ;)

Pit, Do you carry a hiking stick or staff? I do not think I have ever seen one in your pics?

Bill

I keep trying the link and getting sound but no pics or text. Have you ever seen any cougar tracks on your walks? I don't recall you posting any pics if you have. Perhaps you need to start looking for them :) Be careful up there man!

Mountain lions are my worst fear when hiking out here. With that in mind, I once took a Swamp Rat Rucki on a pre-dawn hike. Really didn't think there would be anybody out in the area and at that time, but I was so wrong... and it was kinda awkward :o

Now that I have watched this video, it seems that “Cougar Attack” was the title given to this to get some media attention. It seems more appropriate to call it “Cougar defending itself.”

As much as I love dogs, I think the dog owner was in the wrong here. I bet that any normal person, walking down the trail would not have been “attacked.” The guy got a picture of the thing with his phone, and if it wanted to attack, it would be chasing after them instead of standing there looking.

Instead, the guy’s dog was chasing a deer (which is illegal in my State. In fact, it used to be legal to shoot dogs chasing deer....not sure if that has changed since it is not something I am interested in keeping up on), which the cougar was probably eyeing as well.

I can imagine what the cougar was thinking…..”Here I am watching my lunch and getting ready to pounce on it. When out of no where, this unknown creature comes crashing through the woods!!! So yeah, I smack him a couple times and they run away and then stand there looking at me. What the hell? Now I have no lunch too!” :)

So yeah, I definitely think this is the dog owners fault. Want your dog off a leash? That is fine if you can control it. Can’t keep it from chasing deer? Well then, put it on a leash or leave it home.

The reason I come off as being an ass about that, is this is the type of thing where the next thing you know the locals will be calling to have the cougar put down because of an “attack.” All for being surprised by a dog running through its backyard. Not like it went out if its way to attack these two.

Just my perspective on the video.

I agree. There was no "attack". The cat was minding its own business in HIS home when a dog ran up on him and caused a confrontation. Doesn't look to me like the cat was near the trial at all, and even if it was, that's his home, too. I see nothing in the video to indicate that the cat ever was or ever was going to be a threat to someone walking the trail.

I sympathize with the concern dog owners have for the safety of their pets, and I understand why keeping a dog on a leash all the time is not desirable, but if you take your dog into another animals' house don't assume they're going to be a welcome guest. When I'm out hiking I'd much rather see a mountain lion than someone's off-leash dog.
