I agree with the big knife in case scenario. I gave up firearms years ago when I let my permits lapse. The whole thing is a pain in the hole. Anyway, yes we had two black bears shot in town here within the last couple of weeks. So I pack a big blade out of concern of accidental contact. One of the blackies here was a mother and the cubs took off, not to be found, which sucks. I guess that there are no easy answers to wildlife\human safety issues sometimes. Actually having your dogs with you is likely your biggest ace in the hole in a bad situation. Down side is that they may get hurt. Do I think that I'm Grizzly Adams when I hump around with a big knife ? Nope, it's simply out of a back of the mind level of awareness particularly at this time of the year. The odds for me of running into a blackie are realistically low, but it does happen here and it is fear\worry\concern whatever, that makes me pack a bigger knife than needed. Not the type of fear were I'm soiling my panties as I snap a bush twig, but the back of the mind knowledge that Individuals have been killed (and eaten) here. As I said, it is rare though. In thick stuff I'll yell out now and then to tell Mr. Blackie that I'm there, 99.9% of the time they skedaddle off. If my odds of drowning are reduced with a life jacket, uncommon sense tells me to wear one. Same with a woods knife. Beautiful pics buddy and beware blocked trails as their may be dope growers further in with weapons. As I'm sure you're aware of.
