There was a cougar in Chicago roaming the streets today...
wildcat-cougar.jpg

The funny thing is, I was in the forest preserve with nut_Sak_himself from the forums a few weeks back and noticed a chit load of huge cat paw prints in the snow.

If they were men they would of used some Rucks or Aks :D:D

I am surprised they shot the cat with bullets instead of a tranquilizer.....

When I was in college I learned a lot from "Cougars" roaming the streets of San Francisco and Minneapolis.

.

That was a pretty sad story. They should have tried to trap or tranq the thing first before getting trigger happy. It didn't look like that cougar was threatening anybody. Sheeple city folks got all paranoid and excited and probably reported that they were in danger. That Cougar was lost and totally out of its environment. It was probably more scared than the people.

hahaha. they certainly do provide an ample opportunity for education.

Was a big one too, beautiful cat. Sad it ended with the killing of "Nature gone walk about".
I guess that normally a Zoo would be the only place to see animals like that these days, unless you have the luck to live in the country and/or remote.
Thanks for story. Cheers

Amen to that brother, I couldn't agree more. Sheeple wont be happy (or feel secure and safe) until this great country is paved over with asphalt form from east to west coast and anything wild is dead or on Ritalin.

I agree.. They should of shot it with a tranquilizer instead of unloading their clips.. Peoples safety is important but the situation could have been executed differently..

Man, now i'm all depressed.
Is chicago's animal control program really under-funded or something? i would think that the police over there would have their hands full with crime or at least Human issues.

i know cougars aren't endangered or anything but i'm pretty sure their numbers aren't swelling. in areas where this kind of thing can happen the education system should include the best ways to deal with the situation.

that was a beautiful, beautiful animal and its horrible that its final moments were spent running from gunshots. :(

Chicago police have always been known to be trigger happy.. :thumbdn:
I have had a gun pulled on me for "looking suspicious" when driving to a friends house...:thumbdn:

But.....there are no cougars in IL

From a Feb 2008 press release “While it is not completely impossible for a cougar to be found in Illinois, sighting of a wild one is highly unlikely,” said Acting IDNR Director Sam Flood. “Wild cougars have been found in neighboring states but again, very, very rarely.”

I agree that shooting it might not have been the best option. There was a big stink in Rapid City, SD a few years ago when the Game & Fish shot a young moose that was in town and near a school. Unfortunately, that seems to be the standard response when wild animals find their way into civilization.

good one Tony, nothing wrong with a little cougar action. (does 18 years old with a 29 year old count, or is that not cougar country yet?)

do you guys remember Ligertown? 1995 my dad and I are watching the news thinking "hunting season is on!" I tell you, a lot of people there were glad they were allowed to own guns!

"In 1995, dozens of lions and tigers and crossbreeds escaped their ramshackle kennels of Ligertown near Lava Hot Springs and attacked their owner. An army of law-enforcement officers with high-powered rifles were called in. Petrified officers gunned down, one by one, 19 of the roaring, mangy felines and the nation's attention focused on the little town whose streets ran red with cat blood.

Ligertown, which was nothing more than a bizarre collection of pets, was subsequently razed and its owners tossed in jail after being charged with public nuisance and animal cruelty. "

Personally, I d rather seen the GW shot than the cougar.

Ban, you're totally right, but remember it's Chicago, police there seem to shoot first and then ask questions. One of our top cities on the crime list this year again. Amazing that they've pretty much outlawed firearms there, and as you can see (just like in DC, Baltimore...) it's made the area far safer for humans and cougars. Nice city...

It is estimated that mountain lion populations are higher than they have EVER been. The reason is that the food supply for mountain lions is larger than it has ever been. The deer population of the US is much larger than it was when europeans first landed here. The major food supply fo the mountain lion is deer. It is estimated that the continental US has more than 30,000 mountian lions.
