Could and would ZT do a OTF?

I am heavily invested in ZT. In recent months I have been playing with OTF and considering purchasing a microtech ultratech. I would however like to have a ZT option for these. I always thought of OTF's as just a toy but as I get older they make sense for my daily uses.

Could ZT get in this market or have they already stated not happening or what? I think they would have a market if they were to produce.

There was one planned years back. Didn’t catch on.

WOW, thanks for the info.

Looks like microtech is getting my 280$

I doubt ZT would get into the OTF game. Microtech and ZT do not have a good relationship based on previous designs they’ve both made. Word has it that the ZT OTF rubbed Microtech the wrong way and started some tension between the brands, theres a whole story about that with the ZT 0777 and the Microtech Matrix.

If an OTF is what is on your list, give Guardian Tactical a look too:thumbsup:

Thanks will give them a look.

Hard enuf 2find a 0500, 0610 or 650 side opener for a "reasonable price. So, doubt that an OTF ZT will ever be offered but I'd be all over it if they did.

the H&K Otf's have always been a nice option too...very well mady by Benchmade in the past and now Hogue I believe..anything to keep you away from Microtech:)
OK, Ive heard some things about MT but haven't researched it all that much.

CLiff notes?

They're kind of douche-ey. They released a clone of a ZT knife (the aforementioned 0777) before it came to market, then released piles of versions of it for years. They sued a blogger, I think. I think Tony also sued his son at one point if I remember correctly. Then there's the whole "what kind of moron puts triangle head screws on their knives" thing that requires you to buy expensive tools to work on them.

There are plenty of companies that make nice OTFs, though, so if you want to go elsewhere there are lots of options.

I think ZT could, but it doesn't seem to be their style of knife. Plus it opens up questions of domestic and foreign legality which the rest of their knives generally don't have.

If you want a D/A OTF, Microtech is still your best bet IMO.

Yeah, thats douchy, thanks for that. I dont like "douchery". Their OTF's seem to be the tip of the spear though from the reviews I have seen.

ZT has caught a lot of flack from recent productions, which I participated in to a certain degree. However, I carry them exclusively and I believe they could create anything they set out to do and make it a value.

RUMOR has it Microtech has closed it's doors for a bit due to this virus mess.... Looks like a couple of the main dealers have just received a fresh shipment in stock. Who knows for how long.

Another brand I really like for OTF's is Piranha. They are based out of Twin Falls, Idaho. They specialize in auto's and OTF's exclusively. I've been really happy with my Excalibur:

Oddly, I was JUST talking to a buddy about how you don’t see Piranhas on here that often :D Sweet knife.

ZT showed up to a trade show with an OTF that looked a lot like a Microtech Scarab. Microtech went on the offensive and got inspired by one of ZT's designs, the 0777. They were able to get that to market pretty quickly in the form of the Microtech Matrix. Lawsuits were had. Both companies showed their asses. ZT decided not to clone the Scarab and now we have the Chinese Natrix line and the Launch series. So in the end, we all lost. We lost the 0777, the Matrix and ZT OTFs.

Oh and KAI kinda now owns the rights to any visually exposed liner locks and prints the patent number on the lockbar for the Knockout, Bareknuckle and Natrix's. So there's that too. A company that makes it's hay using the Reeve Integral Lock without even a wink, prints a patent number on a painted chinese lockbar.

That isn’t a rumor. Microtech announced last week in Instagram that they were closing their facility starting today so the employees could self quarantine.
