I do a lot of knife making, and was curious if i could cheaply use excess carbon scale instead of an actual coating

some makers leave forge scale on. burt foster comes to mind. not sure if it adds to wear resistance or anything though. i think he says its lower maintenance(corosion being a large factor), also looks great the way he does it. not sure if this post is helping but burt foster and jason knight leave the scale on, not sure if they come by this forum much but if a mastersmith does it then it cant be bad, right? idk just my 2 cents.

Actually I think most including those guys remove the actual scale either by soaking in vinegar or ferric and just leave a forge finish. There is a difference from forge finish and being covered in scale. Scale can and will flake off of parts depending on how tightly it is adhered. Once soaked in the acid it is pretty easy to scrub off with a wire brush.

An oil soaked and heated forge finish will hold up pretty nicely IMHO.
