Could have been a survival situation..

Good afternoon folks, I just want to share something that happened to me yesterday.. The wife, kid and I were invited for some ice fishing yesterday... We arrived a little earlier then my brother n law. (it's his cabin) deciding to surprise him we thought we could go prepare the cabins stove and lines before he arrived. So we went down the ramp that leads to the lake.. followed the usual path kept cleaned.. About half way to the cabin... I felt the ice break under the car, the driver's side front and back tires dropped in.. suddenly everything turned chaotic... trying to get everyone out of the car with as little movement as possible.. out the passenger side.. The back door wasn't opening.. while my daughter was a sleep in her car seat... Really our nerves were shot.. I brought the wife and kid to shore... and decided to go back to the car to grab whatever I could in case the car did collapse. couldn't manage to get anything because the ice was busted up behind the car and around.. was just supported by a thin underlayer of ice.

So we just waited... called the mother -n-law to come pick-up the kid while we were freezing ourselves to death.... surprising how chilly it is at lake level.

about 30mins passed and my brother n law arrrived.. he brought us the the cabin.. we warmed up as he explained to us his friend had dropped their yesterday... i guess the ice hadn't froze over enough...:foot:

He got a long piece of webbing and we went to drag the car out of the hole with his truck as the ice was breaking under the sentra while we were dragging it out.... again I couldn't explain how shot my nerves and the wifes nerves were. Really got me thinking.. and now I doubt going ice fishing for a while... even though we caught 135 perchaudes, dore. (I'm using the french fish names as well.. I am french and lack the english vocabulary... mah bad :\ )
Nerves are shot thinking about it... gonna go poor me a glass of my friend jack. Later!:D

perchaude = yellow perch
doré = walleye

Good that you got the car out. I saw a guy sink his truck a couple of years ago, 2 weeks after he put a new engine in it. He wasn't too happy ... apparently, immersion is bad for trucks. :)

Yea... I'm glad too.. insurance don't cover if you car falls in a lake :\
Yea it was a great day to fish... there were 8 of us, and we were constantly bringing up the lines... the dog had lot's of fun too!

I'm now rethinking a better place to put my psk. it was in the trunk with the fiskars axe... all of it worthless at that time.

Thank you Zaner ;) I'll try and remember that!
I think had my sentra been a truck... I would have been doomed for sure.

My brother -n- law dropped his pick-up also yesterday... but they were 2 of his friends dragging him out with webbing and there trucks.. A lot of action in 1 day..
He had all 4 tires sank in and spinning and trowing up water.. it was fun to watch now that my car was safe and sound! LOl:D

Glad things worked out OK but you would NEVER find me intentionally going onto a frozen lake. I've never gotten the appeal of ice fishing (though my ancestors seemed to like it) and I sure as heck would never intentionally drive a vehicle on a frozen lake. Had you gone through, it wouldn't likely have been a survival situation, it would more likely have been a funeral.

Whew, glad to hear you got everyone out with no incidents. The PSK can live in the trunk, but I'd maybe rig something up to the kid's carseat for trips like that (move it from the trunk to the interior when going out on the ice). You know you're gonna grab the car seat, and if it is attached, that is one less thing to worry about having to grab. If you don't have a spring loaded centerpunch as part of your kit, I would definitely advise it! Those function under water with no issues, unlike a hammer style :D

Anyhow, glad to hear it was a positive outcome AND a great fishing trip :D

Glad things worked out for you cuphead. Wouldn't want the Canadian content, here, to diminish. :D

Good fish haul, too. Is that you in the picture?

Doc

Holy crap bro - I'm glad to hear you guys made it ok. That could have gotten a lot uglier quick.

Nope that's not me in the picture, it's 1 of my brother-n-laws holding a walleye.
As for canadian content, there should be lots more ;) plan on getting myself out more and getting some pics n vids to share with you all..:D:thumbup:
