Could I get some suggestions on a side arm?

Why not use the karda?
A lot of the kardas seem too small to be comfortable working tools. That's why I got a special 7" karda for Red Flower's knife. It's big enough to hold on to and work with. The small ones can do work, but most of us are spoiled by having used knives with good sized handles.

Where can I buy such fine products? Was it a special order?

Yep, I sent a note to Kami Sherpa with the specifics.

Some of the larger khukuris have nice size kardas, but then they won't fit into the sheaths of the smaller khukuris.

Maybe Yangdu would be willing to test market a few smaller khukuris with larger kardas. It seems like a number of people are just not carrying the karda at all though, so they may have given up on them. I don't know how such a test would play out.

Again, here's Red Flower's knife. A 14" khukuri with 7" karda and chakma.

I guess the chakma really does not need to be that big. You could go with a larger karda and a smaller chakma. I didn't want to increase the chance for confusion by getting too complex.

Yeah, you're right... I think all of the kardas for the khukuries under 15" are too small to use. the stuff for the 15" knives to me are generally usable. I can get maybe 2 and a half fingers on them.

The ones in the pic are really a nice size.

Nice pic, except for the dandelions. :D ;)

The cherry blossom petals are a nice touch.

That is one beautiful khukuri! I'd love to start seeing larger kardas and chakmas as a regular HI feature, or even an option.

I am a connoisseur of dandelions. That is one of my prized specimens!

The neighbors are all jealous of the beautiful yellow flowers and white globes on my lawn. Theirs are just a boring green. I often see them pointing at my place with an envious look ( I think it’s envy ) on their faces.

I think I know what I want. A Yvsa Cherokee Special karda without the handle and frog. I'd rather make my own. Is yangdu accepting custom orders? I dont know if I'd call that custom, more like unfinished. Thanks for all your help.

This is a good question for Yangdu when she returns. (Maybe after things settle down a little. She might have a backlog to catch up on right when she returns.)

I also love the ragnars scandinavian steel. So smooth looking. I wish I could eat it. Which RC is good for a camping knife? 59 maybe? I want something that can sharpen easily, and stay sharp for a looooooong time.

had me going there.I was going to suggest a .357 on the low side or the mighty .45 onthe other end. ;) but since ur talking knives the BAS has the chukma and karda for the little stuff.Like cutting a fuzzsticks or potatos or meat.I myself carry my cold steel tanto for back-up hidden in my backpack(it can chop wood if I had to).The swiss army knife is the greatest little tool going u can use for almost anything. :DBut if ur to make one ur self out of HI blades then wait for Yangdo to cme back she'll help u out.Hey,I just checked out that swamprat site very nice that bandicoot. frank

That bandicoot is sick! Awh! Damn! It's perfect. You guys are great. I'm gonna get that thing, and when yangdu is ready I make another knife and keep it around for when I get lonely.

I just want to cry, I'm so happy, I'm so moved, when will I ever be free of wordly trappings. People just make things that are too damned good. Stop it. I mean cant a man not have to be so rapped up in beautiful things. woo. Now I understand what Holy Toledo! means

Please tell me. I've wondered about that too. I thought it was a religious thing, but I guess not.
:D

Interesting...all good stuff, but I am with Howard on this one. I started a long time ago asking Bill to provide me with larger kardas and have upsized most of mine to date. the 6"-7" kardas are sometimes set up with a matching chakma, sometimes a purposely smaller karda, depending on the use I intend for them.

My favorite camping setup (prepared campsites anyway) is a Pen knife with 2 full size kardas...one left full thickness for whittling typ work and the other thinned out considerably for cleaning fish and table use.

Between the Pen *kit* and a full size khurki (any of them), I feel well prepared for any sharp need.

Like munk...my alternate is a quality firearm...

Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins" by William and Mary Morris (HarperCollins said:
"Holy Toledo!" - This exclamation of surprise refers to Toledo, Spain, which became one of the great centers of Christian culture after its liberation from the Moors in 1085. Its thirteenth-century Gothic cathedral, one of the largest in Europe, is the seat of the Cardinal Archbishop of Spain.
