Hey yall, as i said in another post my bro and i plan on making a couple drop point knives from a saw blade. I was wondering if yall could post some of your creations made from a saw blade.? the one that we are looking to make looks something like this but with a lil less curve:

Is there a certain blade type that should not be made from a saw blade? and do i need to harden the steel to hold an edge better?

thank you

look at my recent thread on "knife number 5" - that's a saw blade stock knife.

I do full annealing and normalizing, then bring up to non magnetic and hold just a bit to make sure, then quench- so far brine seems to work best. I always have to straighten a bit after temper. tempering I do to what my thermometer claims is 390 for an hour. repeat twice more. (i let the blade cool in the toaster oven) and that generally gives me a straw color.

the blades are very tough and flex good, but hold an edge a bit less well than my AlMar benchmark...

of course, I am a newbie, and while my results are getting good, it is still worth taking anything I say with a few chunks of salt

From what I understand, saw blade steel is generally another mystery steel. Sometimes saw blade steel is worthless. Alot of it nowadays is case hardened, which isn't desirable in knifemaking. I recommend buying some steel so you know what your getting. It's not expensive for a piece of 1095 either.

Have fun,

Alex

You can get fooled for sure. I generally get old old BIG crosscut blades, so prett y thick. There's bandsaw steel for sale on the net, too.

Nothing wrong with new steel, but - It *is* hard to find thinner stock sometimes, though.

that is beautiful...well as a matter of fact i am a member of the lumberjack team for my college, so 2man buck saws are easy to find. Every year at least one will bet broke, bust some teeth, etc so that might be a good place to start.
thanks yall
