Could the Basic-7 be the perfect mid-size Busse?

Ok... thanks for rubbing it in, man! I don't own any basics. :grumpy:

Tell me, does anyone know the difference between Modified-Infi... and Infi? :confused:

Was modified INFI a version of INFI with a different metalic composition, or a different heat treat that current INFI enjoys? :confused:

Hogs want to know! :thumbup:

If I remember correctly, the biggest difference is INFI has cobalt and M-INFI does not.

Modified INFI is True INFI Enough for me.

I can not see any difference in use.

I sure see a difference between the Basics and the Swampers/scrappers.

It(M-INFI) just plain holds an edge longer.

I really like the Basic #9 and the #3, the others are neither Fish nor Fowl to me, although my Wife has and likes the Basic #5, I am trying to get Her to use the SHBA (INFI, Hole type fasteners) that I bought Her three years ago.

So Far She is more likely to smile using the Basic #5 She really likes the Buy Brown Sheath for it.

Maybe if I get away from the Factory sheath and get Her a Buy Brown for the Badger She will get more enthusiastic?

Yes, Ronnie. I did just dump a FULL SET. But they were mint condition. I couldn't use them. I can't bring myself to use long-discontinued, unused Busse blades.

Thats my problem. I got a Basic 9 a while back but I can't bring myself to use it. Something about messing up its minty-ness.

I really like everything about the basic line except for the asymetrical grind. Don't know why it just bothers me.

No. Absolutely not!!! ...Of course I only say this because... I DON'T HAVE ONE! :grumpy: :D:D :foot:

Someday...! ;)
Congrats to you on yours!! :thumbup:

What Jaxx said. :thumbup::p

IF Bossman Jerry bring the basic line , he should make NMBASIC 11, I just love Long and big Blade:D:thumbup:

If not, it's pretty close.

How come it looks so new? ;)

:D That's because it's a safe queen. I bought it five or six years after the series have been discontinued and similarly to Dennis in MA I cannot make myself put dents and scratches in it. But unlike him I'm keeping mine. :)

The Basic 7 is a fine knife. I definitely like it.

But my Basic 9 ... I love!!:eek::D:eek:

Ubet--well, for a mid-size the B7 is as good as it gets in my experience, but it's still a mid-size. My Basic 9 has seen a lot more use and years ago actually replaced my original SHBM because of better ergonomics/comparable performance, but my Basic 5's in all their forms/mods have seen more use than any other fixed blades I own. For me, it goes:

>>anything up to 4" blade = folder (although the SY SS4 is a great knife);

>>most versatile fixed utility/hunter = Basic 5 ; and

>>anything longer than that, for me we're talking chopper/batonners. B9 is hard to beat for an all-around, but I do like a machete better for speed cuts on light brush and the NMFBM for chopping/batonning anything larger than 3" diameter branches/saplings/logs.

The Basic 7 comes the closest of any knife I've seen to handling both utility work and light chopping/batonning chores without significant compromise or unnecessary weight and with epic durability, but all said and done it's still a one-size-fits-all proposition which is never quite as good as having a variety of more specialized blades.

I will say this: backpacking into "outback" for several days of camping, if weight is a concern (which it always is for me) a B7 on your belt and a Spyderco Military in your pocket will cover a very broad spectrum of work without giving up much at all in terms of efficiency, reliability, durability or comfort.

i would really like to give the basic 9 a shot...
as far as mid sized blades, imo, i have found the skinny ash as my go to.

the Basic-9, i NEED to find one!...

Some comparison pix to a SHSHII and a Camp Tramp. Just for perspective.

The SHSH makes the B7 look TINY. And I never consider the SHSH to be a big knife while fooling with it by itself. (Sort of like, if you want to look thinner, hang around fat people. LOL

The CT has the saber grind and a bit taller/wider blade. Otherwise they are pretty much interchangeable.

Ignore the awful photo skills. Dark room and a terrible flash. The scratches on the B7 aren't that visible and the SHSH isn't as dimply as that.

just grab some 60 grit sand paper, and rub the hell out of it, totally random patterns. by the time your done, you'll want to strip it, and by that point you won't care what it looks, and will be much more likely to use it.

Wow the SHSHII really dwarfs the B7. It's cool to see them side-by-side like this.

I'm pretty sure the B7 is after the SHSHII. I think they were in the Ergo era. I wasn't around back then or I'd have far more old-school knives. At far cheaper prices than I acquired them for in the "modern" era. LOL
