I have a brother who is putting a bunch of hardwood flooring down in his house and as a result will likely have a bunch of pieces left over. Can it be used at all for handle material? I'm not talking for high end knives here obviously I was thinking for some shop knives, beater knives, that kind of thing and using it as scales?

Yeah it's not laminate, oak flooring. Can you stain it then CA glue when you finish it? Or just use an oil and/or CA finish?

Cut the oak into scale size peices. Then take a plastic sealable container and put some ammonia in it. Rig something up to suspend the oak scales above the ammonia. Seal the top and leave for a few days. The fumes from the ammonia will give the Oak a nice look.

Flooring works great for handles. But oak and most other woods are "boring".
Keep an eye out for special pieces of flooring that have extra figuring in it, that are not so boring. Curly maple, brazillian cherry are two woods that can be nice.
