Could you be the next surviorman?

STAGE 2 really hit the nail on the head. Les' personable nature really bridges the gap between those of us who are truly interested in what he's doing and those viewers who simply want to be entertained and aren't necessarily interested in the subject matter.

That isn't to imply that we don't find him entertaining as well.

Anyone ever meet Joezilla? Humor, skills and from what I've been fortunate to see first hand, a great teacher.

It's all about the man, not the skills. Les would put us all to shame in the survival department, showshoes and solitude proves it, but even if his skills were only midling his demeanor, atitude and sense of humour are what makes the show worth watching.

I would also like to add, as much as I respect Ray Mear's knowledge he could NOT do what Les Stroud does, he's not intersting enough, and let's face it, he's too fat. Watch him hike without gear, you can hear him huffing and puffing, in the same places where Les would be hauling his gear, and barely be breathing hard. Les is one in a billion and will never be replaced.

The filming isn't that hard they probably taught him how to do it, probably have it set up where you put camera here measure 5 ft away and you are set probably has a monitor where he can look at himself to make sure he got a full head shot as well. Also keep in mind that he probably has hours and hours of footage which was edited out. What we are seeing is the "prime shots" Also keep in mind that after all this is a show, his attitude and everything is confident, but I'm pretty sure most of us would be just as cool if we knew that we are only going to be by ourselves for a few days and back up is just a phone call away. There noway that discovery channel is going to send someone into those conditions without a sat phone and a transponder as a safety net. As far as Les is concerned while I have never been a great fan of the series, I respect Les, a great deal after reading an interview he gave how he and his wife built a humble house living off grid, given the fact that the man probably made millions of dollars on the series and book deals. That just shows a great deal of character.

Actually I believe he was in video production long before the survivorman series. He used to do music videos, I think.

I have the survival skills and experience, However there is no way I have the technical know how with the cameras etc, and probably not the patience with the equipment he has. Another thing that wouldn't work with me is the directors decide what he takes with him. While my kit is definitely minimalist I'll be damned if I'd let someone else decide my carry items. The guy is very easy going with a great attitude. I enjoy his show as what it is entertainment, he will be missed if he goes after all his is one of the only shows I will make the time to watch.

I'd jump on the opportunity. Got my skills and myself back in shape, and have done video and music for a long time.

Hmm, well NO... I couldn't be the next survivorman. Les is about 25 days younger then I am, but I am no way nearly skilled or in shape enough. Plus, lets face it, he WANTS (or wanted) to do this, and I see no reason to film myself miserable, cold, wet, and hungry at this stage of the game. I don't have the filming skills either.

I really enjoy his show, and I will miss it a lot.

I agree, this is just proof that Les is down to Earth and doesn't let the fame and fortune get to him. I think these characterstics are important to making an accurate and useful survival show.

Brian, you don't need to be picked up by discovery to make a show.
Just grab the camera and hit the woods, you could become a celebrity on bladeforums.:)

I could probably do it but my plant ID'n sucks and I be pissy doing all the back tracking for the camera gear....that in its self would wear my patients thin on the 1st shoot.,I would like a camera crew to follow me....second my wife would not like me traveling all over the world seeing the sights w/o her . so overall no I guess I could not be the next Survivorman .

I could not do it...Unless videos of becoming food for predators is entertainment...in which case I could do it...once.

Like a lot of us here I have absorbed a lot of knowledge over the years, but there is so much more to it then having the skills.
I hate to say most likely I would be disappointed in anyone that took over, except for Ray Mears, I like his show almost as much as Strouds.

With enough time to get my skills up to par, I think I could give it a good run from a purely survival perspective. However, I know less than nothing about film-making, and consider it a small miracle that I can occasionally post decent still pictures on Bladeforums.

Also, I think that making such a show would be a very intense ongoing experience, of which only a small part would be the actual wilderness outings. Once you factor in travel and prep time, film editing, producing, and promotions activities, you have a serious full-time job - and from what I understand, Les does a lot of this stuff on his own, for which I give him a great deal of respect. In my opinion, it would be difficult to do all of that and take on the individual survival situations. I worry that I would wind up seeing my wilderness outings as labour-intensive parts of my job, as opposed to opportunities to get away from it all.

In my opinion, to do all of this successfully, you would have to love W&SS stuff and the film production industry almost equally.

All the best,

- Mike

Hell, no I couldn't replace Les.

I could but I can't go anywhere without my dog !!!:D
Well, we could call it Survivordog and you could be her film crew.

To nominate someone in their absence -- isn't this kinda what Bearthedog does already, minus the filming?
