Could you help me find a new folder? ($500 limit)

My dilemna: I've had the desire to get a custom, or very high end production knife recently, but i just don't know what is out there.

I'm a big fan of larger knifes, my main edc is a zt 560 with micarta scale. I'm looking for a longer knie with a slick action like my 560, and preferably a flipper.

$500 is about as much as i would spend on a single folder.

So without further ado, what do you guys recommend for me?

Two knives i have considered up to this point are the
spyderco southard
and John Grimsmo Norseman (really really want this :D)

Are you able to up your limit some ? all you will find in that price range is gonna be junk

;)

have you looked into strider, CRK, hinderer or grayman?

Not a fan of crk designs. Grayman seems unusually chunky. Hinderer is pretty good but my zt fits that bill nicely. And strider is something i would consider, but not my #1 choice as a flipper is important

I'm sure more people will chime in with their preferences and be more useful than I am, but I would recommend looking at the Exchange, in both production and customs sections as well as the knife-makers area and see what interests you. So much is preference.

FWIW, I have handled (but not owned) the Southard. I am not a collector or accumulator of lots of knives, so I don't have it (only have one quality knife), but it's not a knife that disappoints. It felt great and the reviews for it are incredible. Hinderers are also fantastic, but likely will run over budget.

I've not heard anything but high praise for Ray Laconico's stuff. I just haven't bought any of it (see my reasons above) but his stuff is very appealing to me.

I've also handled the 0560 and I really would love to nab one of those one day!

Agreed. Get a Ray Laconico if you can!

Thanks for the reply Robert. I've been actively watching the exchange since my join date, it's close enough to be called an addiction. My older brother bought a southard about a month ago, and i really liked it. He decided to sell it though a little while ago, because he was afraid to sharpen it. What a dumbass lol. After buying my zt 560, the desire for a hinderer totally dropped. My 560 is everything i could have asked for and more. Laconico also makes a really great knife, those are damn near impossible to get a hold of though.

The Norseman is beautiful:) I started watching knife making Tuesday around week 8, so I have a soft spot for them....its already been said, but take a look at Ray Lacoinco's work to, the blast flipper he makes comes in a liner lock and frame lock version, the blade rides on bearings, over all around 9", blade is a little less than 4". Also he makes a blast 1 and 2, and quite honestly I don't remember the difference between them:( only down side is they run more around $550 (take a look though, that extra $50 will mean nothing:D)

Heres a link to his for his forum,

He's a nice guy to talk to as well:)

If you are willing to wait for the release the ZT 0600 might fit the bill if you are looking for a larger blade (4.25"). Otherwise there are plenty of other awesome knives out there, many already mentioned here (dang you all for bringing up the Norseman, I'm really wanting one these days!!!).

In the $500 range you have a ton of possible choices.

Some makers to take a look at are....

Will Moon (Mark VI).....stunning piece of cutlery
Mikkel Willumsen (Urban Tactical).....I own one and its an amazing large folder
John Grimsmo (Norseman).....amazing knife and one I need to get myself
Ferrum Forge (Pretium).....not sure if Elliot is still taking Pre-orders, but he has a YouTube channel to check out
Ray Laconico (Blast Flipper).....a knife that everyone should own
Shirogorov (Mod 95).....another gorgeous knife and highly recommended

Those are just to name a few, but there are plenty more to look at.

Def take a look at the exchange, you will find everything you need right there.

Contact Alan Davis and tell him what you want and he will make it for you. His flippers are so SMOOTH!!!! With Alan you can have the steel you want , the handle you want, the blade you want, ect!!! Good Luck! Kevin :D

im curious why strider is out of the question?

best knife in that price range i have ever owned. crk is great but i like something a little more heavy duty. and my strider smf was way smoother than any crk i have owned. blade options, steel options, size options, blade coating options...... now why was strider out of the question?

Have Alan Davis build a custom flipper for you. He builds flippers pretty regularly and his work is stunning.
