Could you use just a folder.

I used to carry a SAK Camper - it was all I needed - I didn't keep it that sharp - but with a little care - I would have a fine time with it.

I wouldn't WANT to carry just that for an extended time - but could.

I tend to use knives too hard to trust a folder.

That said, I do have an awesome Custom Bob Dozier “Folding Hunter” style knife that locks-up like a bank vault, and it would be a tool to handle cutting chores with ease, but It’s not a tool for chopping or baton work.

What blade steel would you prefer in a folder? For the ones I mentioned, most are S30V, one is 154CM and the other is D2. Cracking out the Spyderco Sharpmaker at home, I can put a super scary sharp edge on all of them. In the field? I had one at one time, don't know if the lockback on this one is the best out there, still a good knife. Queen Mountain Man D2 or 1095.

Maybe a D2 Grip, or a D2 Military?

You could definitely get by with just a folder.

I have a two-bladed Buck alpha crosslock with a straight edge blade and combination saw + guthook. The blade holds a terrific, thin edge, and the saw is surprisingly effective at limbing fallen trees. I used to pack it all the time before I 'matured' into my current 'fixed-blade appreciation phase'. It's a really great design, and it's built like a tank.

Personal experience aside, I think that Anthony Hopkins demonstrated how effective a solid lockback can be in a survival situation. ;)

All the best,

Over Christmas/New Years I've been seriously eyeballing those Buck Crosslocks in the SIR/Cabelas catalog. I've been having a hard time finding any reviews feedback on them though, not a lot of good pics floating around either. Do you have the regular one or the S30V version? Did yours come with a pocket clip? How does the Crosslock compare in size to the Buck 110? I'm really curious about the overall thickness of the knife grip. Is the saw any good for wood or is it primarily a bone saw? I'd love to see a pic of one next to a Buck 110 just so i can get an idea of its actual size.

I guess i'm full of questions today, lol.

Sure. I think I could fare well with my laconico folding nessie and a nice axe. If we are talking strictly a folder and no other implement such as a saw or axe, then my Farmer or a OHT would due. But, what fun would that be?;)

Good thread udtjim.....

Would you quit rubbin' that in already... :grumpy:

I will see if i can find one of each if nobody else does first.

I have a few Folders in 154CM, Two Gerber Gators and a Leatherman. The Bucks are their old standby 420HC which is really great steel for reasonable priced folders. I have had some s30V and quite a few CS's.

i could get by with just the Case stockman that i typically EDC...fixed blades are mostly more convenient and i don't have to think as hard about what i'm doing when using them.

but if i were to specifically choose a folding knife to take the place of a bushcraft blade for me, i would go with my GEC pioneer trapper. it is a large, heavy trapper type slipjoint with springs that open with real authority. the blades both have half stops, so if they closed by accident somehow, they wouldn't close all the way to my fingers in most cases.

Damn nice knfe Simon. GEC makes really nice stuff. I had a SARPENT I scored from Ilbruche(damn wheres Bruce been at?) I regret selling.

I have the regular version, in 420HC. It holds an excellent edge. The lockup is fantastic. Originally, I was apprehensive that the dual blades would make for a loose lockup, but it's as solid as any knife I have. As you can see, it does have a pocket clip - but my model came with a great thick-gauge nylon sheath as well. The clip can be removed, but it fits in the sheath with the clip attached, so there's really no need (and it adds extra grip). The saw is great for wood. As you can see, it has two layers of teeth. I have no idea how you would sharpen it, but after years of cutting wood and bone, I never had to. The handle thickness is just right for me. The handle contours are a bit more angular than I usually like, but I haven't found it to be a problem. That being said, you might find that it causes some discomfort with really prolonged cutting. My only concern with this knife is that the liners are just a tad thinner than I would consider optimum - but the lock has never failed me. On top of its solid design and good f&f, this thing comes with flippers, which is just awesome.

I think it's a great pocket knife.

A few pics for you. I didn't have my 110 on hand for comparison shots, but I included a measuring tape.

All the best,

- Mike

Of course, there is a big difference between what you need, e.g. a good
folder, and what you want, e.g. a fixed blade.

I can get by well with a Buck 110 or Lone Wolf T2, but if I'm in the
back country I want a reliable fixed blade. The fixed blade may be a
little Busse Game Warden, but it's still a fixed blade.

A knife that's already broke in the middle.......Nah, not for me....hell I don't even trust stick tangs !!!!!

Get by with only a folder, sure. If I had and axe/hatchet or machete it would be even easier but just a folder would be more then enough as long as I used it liek a folder was supposed to be used.

My picks would be one of the following: large Boker Sodbuster, Ritter Griptilian or a SAK (farmer or Rucksack). I think any of these knives would be capable of doing most chores.

Here's my carry for any sort of hiking, camping or wilderness activity.

Buck 110 - cutting and because it looks cool.

Gerber Gator Combo Ax (pocket ax) - chopping, batoning, digging, prying, use the back as a hammer, hold it like an ulu and carve, chisel and slice. I even use it for food preparation. Just remember to take the little knife out of the handle, the magnet does not hold it in when using it as a hatchet. Carry a honing rod to touch up the edge.

SAK Huntsman - 2 blades for fine cutting, saw for small limbing and to cut stops for detail work, back of saw makes a great fire steel striker, toothpick to pull PJ cotton out of match case, scissors come in handy especially as part of FAK, screwdriver is a mini-prybar.

I could probably get by with just the Gerber and SAK - but it would not be as much fun.

If you had to, I'm sure you could. But why would you want to?

On a different note, I did a comparison on my last camping trip. I found that for every knife task that I could do with a Mora, my SAK Farmer did it better... Interesting.

Never advocate for a "survival folder" there is no such thing for a serious survivalist.

Umm.... There are plenty of 'serious survivalists' that come to mind that use nothing more than a Buck 110. If you don't use it for unecessary tasks like batonning (ducks under desk) it will work fine. My great-grandpa, grandpa and dad are examples of this.

Now to the OP: jim...if I say yes do I have to send the Moras back?:) Because I'm pretty confident that the Buck would cover all my bases. Just ain't as much fun.

I'm going to go with the flow here...

If I had to trust my life to one of my folders, it would be my Spyderco Manix. That thing is built like an absolute tank.

That being said, fixed blades are so fun to play with that I can't imagine going without. :o

AWESOME!
Thanks man!
Great pics and write-up!

I love Bucks but why can't they put some decent pics on their website?
I think your excellent pics just made them a sale!
:D
I like traditional folders (slipjoints and lockblades) and Spyder-hole type folders but last summer i bought a cheapy Remington Liner lock with the flipper function.
Its actually a decent knife and i've been flipping it open ever since, addictive really!
lol!
Hmmm i really like Bucks 420HC but i can get the S30V crosslock for only 7$ more!
Cool!
