I was looking for a Fallkniven S1 or H1 on ebay, and I didn't see any for a price I liked with satin blades. All of a sudden, I came across a single F1 model with micarta handles for the best price I've seen from a reputable seller, and next thing I knew, I had bought it. Something in my head went nuts and started clicking buttons. I had no intention of buying an F1 ten minutes ago.

Any of you ever experience this go-crazy-and-buy type of behavior? I am normally super slow about buying things, especially when they are not cheap, and I don't know what happened.

Does anybody have an F1, especially this version? Any thoughts?

Also, as a side question, can somebody tell me the difference between G10 and Micarta? I know they look different, but I've been told they are similar. I guess I'm asking about composition. I have not had experience with either type of handle material. Thank you.

Micarta (canvas, paper etc with epoxy) is a strong laminate with good looks.G 10 is stronger ,it's not so "nice" F1is a good compact knife that can do 90% of the average jobs.Congrats with this top quality product.

thanks guys. thanks for the explanation too.

Dantor, those knives are sweet! i love the orange cord. may i ask what's the top knife in the pic? i would guess busse but i'm not a good recognizer yet :)

How much does this Fällkniven cost in the US?
Next door to Sweden, here in Finland they cost a mint! Have a suspicion they are cheaper in the US esp with the Dollar/Euro exchange.
NICE LOOKING KNIFE!

Thanks tka1, the top knife is a Ranger RD7, in orange G10 handles, Justin did it for me, it is my "chopper" and I luv it!

Tell me about it. Not often, but once in a while. And I also was

awesome, Dantor. i should have known! i was just looking at the ranger knives site yesterday. that is a beautiful knife. i did not recognize it without the coating and with orange handles. i'm guessing that's different steel than standard?

bh49, thanks. that makes me feel better :)

Micarta is epoxy in a matrix of paper or linen or similar (something else thin & porous).

G10 is epoxy in a fiberglass matrix.

I've used both and like them both. Can't say I prefer one over the other. They're my favourite handle materials.

Enjoy your F1 & make it earn its keep!

I've got mine for well under $100 with Thermorun handle though.
Eric made a sheath for me and it's my favorite outdoor knife. F1 & Gransfors axe - you can't beat this outdoor duo:thumbup:

thanks for your input, Doc. great info

NI200... i was looking at some gransfors axes recently--the mini belt hatchet and wildlife. do you have either?

Nope, standard 5160 on my RD7! As for my fallkniven F1 mine also has thermorun handles too. I see here in the US, getting micarta makes it double the price. But it (yours) looks way nicer! When you get it, show us some pictures.

So true... makes me wonder if it's actually worth double the price. I guess that's in the eye of the beholder. I'm still very much looking forward to it, and it wasn't completely double $100 luckily. I'll put some pics up when it comes.

Forgive my ignorance, but I thought the 5160 was a high carbon steel and that's why it was usually epoxy coated for corrosion resistance. If i'm right, it's okay without the coating? Higher risk of rust? I'm assuming if so then it is negligible enough with care that it's not a big deal. How does that work anyway--just tell Justin what you want, and he'll whip it up for you? I will say again that thing is pretty! Have you done any good chopping with it?

I'm no expert either, but for the things l like I try and do my research and coming here and other like forums I've learned a lot from many who are and have a whole lot of experience and share it.
So what I've learned is 5160, uncoated does have a higher risk of rust but if treated correctly, with care and maintenance (like you said) should be fine, and so far, for me it is. I liked the satin finish and I've heard the coating comes off anyway over general use. I've had no problems, I clean my blades after every use and put a cleaning/protective coat of DLT or other similar product.

You got a good deal on your F1, good job, Fallkniven's are very well liked blades. When you have it in your hands and use it you'll know what we mean.

Since getting the knife "bug" I've been collecting many blades and I've been dealing with many makers/sellers/companies and none have been better than Justin's Rangers! Many of them could learn a thing or two from the way he does things. In my opinion nobody has better customer service, email him/call him, you'll see.

Read about him and Fallkniven and others in other threads (like in "the good, the bad, the ugly" in exchange), I'm not alone in this opinion. I just pass along what I have learned, now it's your turn!

My F1 is my favorite blade when backpacking. Great all around fixed blade. It will serve you very well.

Good luck with the F1. I have SEVEN of them and two more coming in :)
I am currently using the lam vg10 but I started with a black vg10 in 2001.
I guess your really nice F1 will be a great knife for you for decades. Its a bit tricky to sharpen if you dont use the mousepad method.

Now I have my F1 in a neck sheath made from a open leather sheath.
Now you are bitten by the Fallkniven virus and in a year or two you will find that you have at least four Fallknivens. :)

thanks nodh! i can't believe you have 7! you find use for all 7? do you use different ones for different tasks?

do you have other fallknivens? and one more, do you notice a difference with the newer laminated blade? sorry for all the questions! very cool.

i am really excited. the knife should get here on monday or tuesday (seems like it's taking FOREVER). i am not an expert sharpener but you can bet i will be before i try to sharpen my F1 for the first time. i will try to get some pics up since somebody asked about that. take care guys.
