Council Tool Velvicut Hudson Bay Axe- First Impressions (pic heavy)

Hey CW -

So I did the review on the BMC - I wonder if we saw the same thing, sharpness wise. I think we might have.

Still around Cattledog :)

Thanks for the reply, and glad to hear 24 inches is the mark, that puts it in green river territory.
I balked on the Best Made because they did not respond to my emails about specs
24inches will work for me and is a good size for all around utility use imo. My use is general camping/bushy stuff/ and as a landscapers tool.
Should you get the chance in your review can you pound on the poll a little bit. Drive some wood wedges, bonk some logs etc. Let us know what you think about it's
accuracy and solidness wise.
Thanks and take your time.
P.S.
Your Photos are top notch....

Cattledog: what address did you send your emails to? Did you send them to me? I checked my history and couldn't find anything.

Thanks for the review! I'm very tempted by this new line that they have out. Need to see how it compared size wise to the Bruks I have now. I need/want a heavier ax, used to what I grew up with and the Bruks I have is too light/small for me.

Nick I recently sent one to you using the board here which you promptly answered, thank you.
Prior to that I sent two emails at separate times about product info to BMC headquarters.
They were sent to the address on their web page on the bottom.
I am a fan of BMC.I get it. Owner is a brilliant designer not just with axes.
I like the owners story about his axe experiences. I wish I could find the article again.

Thanks Cattledog, I just wanted to know which channels you were sending it through. I'll see what I can do about getting the main office to improve on responding.

I'm not sure about the article your referring to, but if I run across anything that fits the bill I'll pass it along.

Nice review and comparison. I wonder if the keenness of the edge (or lack of) isn't intentional. I have read the opinion that the sharp European edges are designed for the mostly soft woods in that region. In any case, a minute or two on the belt grinder would remedy that. I want one!

Kycolonel, The US Forest Service standard for any chopping axe regardless of wood to be chopped is hair shaving sharp, as a dull axe is more likely to glance and hit your leg than a sharp axe that bites in. Hope this helps:)

I got final word yesterday from Council Tool regarding this axe. The axe will be 23" long plus or minus a half inch. Council may offer a longer handle as an option in the future but for now this is the chosen length. The steel on my head tested to a Rockwell Hardness of 53, so within the range as specified from Council Tool (50-54). Council is making sure that all new axes come sharper than how mine arrived, which should make it more turn key out of the box.

As soon as I get my axe back from them I will post my field review with pics in the Review section. Thanks again to everyone for all the great comments.

Cheers, CW

Hey Colorado Wildman
Just got mine today. It measures 22.5 inches all good usable inches to the knob. The edge bevel angle is thick around 27degrees which I like. Mine came paper cutting sharp but not shaving sharp out of the box.
I like the sheath because it fits and wears well with a belt I have. ANyway I am busy with season work and can't use it for a while so looking forward to your findings.
By the way you were right on about it being like a SFA on steroids. I have no use for my SFA now.;)
This is a very good looking axe and mine feels very well balanced in hand. Go Tebow.

Awesome Cattledog, thanks for sharing!

FYI I just posted a full field review of this axe on my blog. It's lots of material so it will take some time to copy and convert it over to this forum but I will post it here soon enough. Thanks for all your patience!
