For the first time I bought on Amazon a third party vendor.

Yeah, I am now paranoid about fakes.

Does anyone have some suggestions on what to look for?

To me, it sure seems solid, but I hear horror stories about fake being hard to detect.

Thanks.

Thanks

I have read about how aggressive the scales are, but I don't find them as aggressive as my SRK or even my PM2.

I would post the photos if I knew how, I have never really figured out how to upload photos this site.

Share a picture and I bet we'll be able to help.

Looks legit. CS recently switched to the medium texture g10 so the handle is no longer sand paper coarse.

Good to know Cold Steel also has CQI. :D Next time, I hope they improve the pocket clips. Fully screwed, my clips really latch on my pockets.

I am in the small minority that really likes the hard clip bite that Cold Steel has. They are not going to change it since according to one of my "gear" buddies that goes to any gear/militaria conventions he can they want their knives to be able to clip reliably to pack straps, pack loops, open belt sheaths on gear belts (think police), etc. In some cases, to hang upside down. According to him the CS guy told him that CS figured you could always find an easy way to loosen the clip and its bite, but it is much harder to stiffen it up especially if you are out in the field. CS knives are extremely popular with he military and law enforcement, so there you go.

That being said, my American Lawman was so tight I could barely get it in and out of my pocket. Got a tip to fix it here on BF years ago, and had to do it with my Bush Ranger last year. Get four .25 cent pieces. Put two under the clip at the point of contact to the scales/handles. Let them sit for a minute or so. Try it out in your pocket. Still too tight? Try three quarters.

It took 4 quarters on my American Lawman, and 3 on my Bush Ranger. I use these as work knives and they go to work clipped to my jeans while I climb, crawl and drag myself around as needed on the job. The great thing is that once I got the clips adjusted they have never loosened up, so they stay right where I need them. Must be some kind of spring steel on those clips, but what ever it is it's good stuff.

Hmmm. I just got mine in the mail like an hour ago. I ordered from Cutlery Shoppe so I certainly wouldn't think it's a fake. The texture certainly isn't too aggressive. I got the Tanto. The blade is the hollow ground version though. Didn't they go to all flat grinds on the Recon 1? Seems odd it would have the older blade with the newer scales.

Never thought of it that way, Robert. Thanks for the perspective. You see, I’ve been spoiled by my Spyderco babies. :D My lazy ass way of addressing tight pocket clips is loosening the screws just a tad, but I’ll try your quarter technique.

Glad military and LE folks are carrying Cold Steels. You’d be hard-pressed to find a tougher folder than a Demko design.

Regards,
Jim

Tanto remains hollow ground, only spear and clip point got changed to flat. Tanto will look completely different if changed to flat, the tip transition will become straightline instead of the curve right now. I guess this is the visual they are going for.

From the pics looks 100% legit.

If still unsure, disassemble and take a look inside. That's where even the greatest counterfeiters screw up.

The worst and most difficult knife to detect real vs. counterfeit: Striders! Because Striders change from batch to batch (the screws, scales, the STRIDER logo & font, the flying penis logo and its wings, etc). Even Mick Strider - Micky Ray Burger himself mentioned that he would need to take his knife apart and disassemble in order to detect whether fake or not. Now there are cheap fakes that looks fake from the pics that about 80% of the fakes, but there are very high quality fakes that is a nightmarish difficult to detect. In past I even unjustly accused a seller for selling me a fake Strider, sent it to Mr. Burger and was confirmed it was a real one to my surprise. Those very well made fakes do cost $150-$200. You gotta be an idiot to pay $200 for a fake Strider or any fake knife.

Spyderco fakes are getting real good too...

There's more, but these popular brands are being imported into USA with counterfeit branding and packaging.

100% YES if you are a newbie or inexperienced knife user. If you collect and sell and have vast knowledge and experience in knives, you can safely bet and make online purchases. 80% of my knives (out of 120+) I bought online - under 10 here and the rest on FB groups and ebay.

Only once I got a fake and that was my first knife I bought on ebay - Spyderco Para 2 for $40. Again my mistake - if it is too good to be true, it most probably is!~ For $40 do not expect any descent Spyderco, especially BNIB.
