What are we going to do? I am a self proclaimed expert and can tell the fake spyderco military model knives on ebay and people are buying them! Makes me angry.

Don't buy knives off of eBay?

Seriously, there are so many counterfeits on the market and the counterfeits are getting to be so good that the ONLY way to be absolutely sure you're getting the real deal is to buy from a reputable (preferably authorized) dealer.

Go to Spyderco's forum and report them. Spyderco can have the auction removed.

This is a good idea. First things first is just stay off of ebay for knives, simple as that. I do not buy knives off ebay when there are so many reliable retailers and plus you have the forums for scoring deals.

The problem is that e-bay doesn't care. I've filed a report several times regarding counterfeit / restricted knives, and guess what.....the item/s are still there days later. I have also sent e-mails to the sellers and they always say "you're mistaken".
Yeah, right, a Spyderco military can be had for $35 bucks when it's normally sold for about $150. I think everyone here at bladeforums who is upset about themselves and others getting ripped off needs to send a mass of e-mails to e-bay and look into legal action for knowingly letting their customers purchase a fake item. If you are the head of a knife company your e-mail may carry more weight? IMO, this is a pretty crappy situation all around.

If it's getting to the point where we can't tell the difference between real knives and counterfeit knives, how is eBay supposed to? This isn't eBay's problem, it's ours.

Caveat emptor!

I have gotten my best knife deals on e-bay, that said, I concur with the others that I generally buy "new" from about 5 very reputable dealers who do a lot of business there. There is always some risk otherwise and I'm OK with that, it's on me.

Griping here in the General Knife Discussion does nothing. Spyderco has access to eBay as a manufacturer whose complaints carry some weight. Threads like this belong in their forum, so I am going to move it there.

Goodplace2shop is 67 hardware in Jonesville, NC I get most of my Spydercos from them.
Unitedoutdoors on is also reliable. These are the only two sellers on ebay that I use as 67 hardware is listed as official dealer on Spydercos website and unitedoutdoors has been reliable for me.

Report the auctions if you want to try and make a dent in the issue, report the sellers to Spyderco via email and let them do some of the heavy lifting through their own channels. Educate people that buying from legitimate stores is the only way to prevent getting defrauded. I've reported hundred and hundred and hundreds of counterfeit items on eBay and Gunbroker over the years. Not just Spyderco products, but from many other manufacturers.

The only knife I've ever bought from EBay was that Green G-10 Stag Arms Manix 2 and that was a couple of years ago. Now I am much too leery about all the fakes being up for auction. The good news is there seems to be consensus that we enthusiasts report the reprobates.

I don't think such drastic measures are necessary. There are many reputable vendors on Ebay with tens of thousands of positive feedback points that sell true Spydercos.

Ebay is great, and you can find some smoking deals. But if you see a guy with 37 feedback and his location is Sichuan Province, China, then you can be more skeptical. Or the nobodies who sell supposed sprint run Military's for $79.99, etc.

Bottom line, when using Ebay try to buy from the reputable guys. Report the others and file a complaint on Ebay. I always do.

EBay does care. But how do they know you're not just a competitor trying to get your rival's auction shut down?

You have to report it to Spyderco. They have the magic button to get the auction squashed. On Spyderco's forum there is a thread at the top and a sticky with instructions on how to do this.

I disagree. I think boycotting eBay is a very appropriate response to is type of business behavior. eBay is charging money to maintain a fair marketplace. They are allowing vendors to sell fake/stolen goods in their market. You can say "it's the vendors, not eBay" but I don't agree. That IS ebays job! And they make a lot of money at it. You can say "eBay is just too big. You can't expect them to be able to watch over this." Again, I would respectfully disagree. Thats would be like getting a spyderco with a broken lock and someone saying "pfft, you can't expect spyderco to deal with every little problem. They are a big company and they're too busy" How do you think that would work out for them?

You guys do what you want. I won't give one red ass cent of my money to a site that allows fake and stolen merchandise to be sold on their site even after they have been notified of what is going on.

I don't especially like eBay for several reasons but I have no problem buying legit Spydercos there from the dealers mentioned above and a couple others. A cheap Spyderco shipping from Hong Kong? Sure sounds great!

Why would it be "our" problem , is those who buy without knowing or even worst, those who buy them knowing, liked they are getting a deal, life has a price so does the things we purchase , if you buy fake it feels fake in your hand and it goes to the draw to collect dust, screws fall apart, cheap materials and what is worst now makers hire the same (kevin jones) made in china company's to make them their designs with their same cheap lying mentality, is not my problem but I will make sure my money does not got there.

You can't police the world. You will go crazy and your heart will stop long before you make everyone play by the rules. If Ebay crooks piss you off, stop watching them.
I have reported several Ebay fakes on Spyderco forums. I feel like that's about as much as I can or care to get involved.
