Couple more ready for heat treat

I did up 2 more today ready for heat treat . steel is cm154 both of um . I thought i de try a gut hook and a med size bowie. I will welt on the rod after heat treat i buffed um up and didnt sharpen these im learnin . I did nt get one scratch out thats buggin me so ill re sand and rebuff wont take to long maybee i ll hand sand it out . The file work is fun but the blisters are bad . I Hhave one piece of steel left its a 18 piece of 440 c dont know what to make. tommorrow but ill make some thing practical. kellyw

Weld a rod on? Does that mean your welding something on for a tang? If so, I would strongly recommend against doing that..... your trying to weld two dissimilar materials, and the tang WILL fail. Especially if thats 154 as the writing on the blade indicates. You really need to build the blade and tang as a unit, from a single piece of steel.

I have seen carbon steel/damascus blades that have held with TIG welded tangs..... but for the most part, welding on a tang is asking for trouble.
 
I would cut a female dovetail in the blade and a male dovetail in the tang, then weld it on. This way there is something connecting the two other than just a weld.

If you weld the tang on after heat treat your going to have to temper the weld a little so it's not harder and more brittle than the rest of the knife.
