First can you stack different layers of micarta to make your own designs and if so what type of glue, epoxy works best?
Second I am making a jig for flat grinding, what is the best angle say from edge to spine?
thanks for the help

Epoxy, devcon 2 ton. I would not trust epoxy alone, you will need to pin the handle together.

Make a jig that you can vary the angle. The angle will depend on the thickness of the steel and how high toward the top edge you grind. You can make a jig using a hinge or I have seen some with bolts coming out the bottom on a piece of angle iron. Use the bolts to adjust the angle.

I'm a newb, but I have had pretty good results with a jig at a 3-4 degree angle.

My advice is to learn to grind freehand. You will have different angles based on knife height + steel thickness.

Freehand you can grind any knife......anytime and never change any setups that cost valuable shop time.

Learning to do it freehand may take longer in the begining but you will be much happier in the long run!
Good advise blgoode.....

thanks for the input guys. Just wanted to start with jig so i can kind see how the correct angle "feels". I fully intend to practice freehand, but im sure it will be a LOOOONG while before i can do it like many on here.:) Thanks again for the advice.

I think you'll be surprised by how quickly you'll catch on to grinding freehand. It's not nearly as difficult as you'd think. However, this is stated by a man that has never tried a jig. I've always done all my grinding freehand. I started on a 1 x 30 and then went to a 2 x 42 and now on my KMG. I used to find hollow grinding easier, but now I find them both about equally the same as far as difficulty is concerned.
