Couple of ZT Folder Questions

Could someone tell me if it is best for a folder to have to be either: (relative to closing the knife)

1. shook slightly to encourage the blade to shut on the way down

2. to simply shut in one motion

Or is this no indication of superior quality, and simply a matter of preference ?

Also I would like to better understand framelock issues. If you squeeze a framelock that has the steel insert, and it slides over to 100% after being squeezed is it better for that to be harder or easier to reset relative to unlocking the blade ? I have two identical knives, but have to send one back. I can squeeze both to 100%, but one seems harder to unlock after being pushed that far as if the steel insert is a tighter fit against the blade.

Also one knife has to be encouraged to close while the other simply closes thus the first question.

Sorry for my noob question, and lack of ability to explain this better. The knives are both zt 0804 cf's, and one has to go back. Also one knife has a coating that seems more brown than black so not sure if there is a quality difference there in the coating ?

Anyone have any input here ?

As far as the over travel, that will generally only happen if you're squeezing really hard in a hammer grip. If your thumb is on the spine, when you squeeze the handle, you'll be applying pressure to the back and front of the handle, rather than on the scale, and lock side.

If you're just pushing the framelock in as far as you can for the sake of seeing how far it'll go, you're probably reducing the life of your lock.

I have multiple knives that answer yes to both 1 and 2, where I can get them to fly closed in one quick motion, or I can give them the gentle shake (once they pass the detent) to get them to fall shut.

It's all a matter of your action when closing the knife. My 0450, 0620, and 0562 are all this way.

It may be just a matter of adjusting the pivot screw to get both knives to act the same when opening or closing.
It may be that one has some dirt/debris in the bearings and need to be cleaned.
One may have stronger lock bar tension preventing it from free falling closed.
One may have a deeper detent ball tract on the blade making it free fall.

The lock bar/detent ball come in contact whit the blade when the knife is being closed. That puts pressure against the blade, hence, the detent ball actually makes a groove/tract in the blade.

As far as the lock bar/steel insert traveling over to the point of sticking with a normal grip while using the knife, don't know what to tell you about that. Steel against steel is pretty strong and the lock bar shouldn't travel that much. The two steels should mate with each other and form a solid lock up that doesn't stick.

I've actually tried to move the lock bar over on one of my ZT's, my fingers turned white and the lock bar traveled a smidgen and did not stick.
Maybe my grip is not that strong, but I couldn't move it very much.
