1. What material do you use to make templates for a model you want to make over and over? I was looking at quilters plastic template. You can cut it with scissors or craft knife.

2. I'm trying "acorn" bolts for fastening my handles. They have a 5/16" head and a .162" threaded shank that passes through the knife. I purchased the corresponding rivet drill (only for handle material, not the steel) but am having trouble finding a drill that is close enough in size for drilling through the blade. The closest I can find is 11/64" (.1719") so that is almost .011 slop. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of ditching the acorn nuts all together and moving back to pins.

Thanks!

No problem. If you can't find just 1 for sale, let me know and I will send you one.

I use 1/8" micarta for templates. Plenty structurally sound to handle hundreds of uses, cheap and easy to shape, light to carry around and hang on pegboard. I buy 1/8" natural linen which I don't like using for anything else, so that it kinda sits around till I need a pattern.

Here is a tip. To keep the pattern from sliding around while you try to trace it, flatten the back of the template with rough sandpaper. The scrubbed surface allows you to hand hold it while you trace it and saves boatloads of time clamping everything down each time.

I use aluminum. Some on a peg board but some on a big-A... well large ring. People and flip through and see what I've done. I tend to make single knives though so I don't need much.

I use vulcanized paper. I thought I was going to use it as liner material but I use g-10 and micarta instead.

So, I got a #19 (.166) drill and it seems to sometimes drill pretty small and the Acorn bolts that measure .162 still don't fit in all the holes. should I be using a reamer?

Is it possible that the holes don't line up and therefore don't thread? Or will the threaded portion not fit into the hole. Given .004 of tolerance it shouldn't be a problem. Measure the ones that don't go in that case and see if their tolerance is off. Haven't had this issue, just trying to help.

same threaded portion will not fit in one hole and will fit in other. I got a #18 which is a few thousandths bigger.. should work well? I am using some really nice Gflex epoxy that should hold great, this acorn bolts is probably overkill but hey, why not?
