couple questions about my new craftsman 2x42

1. what should the platen position or height be? do i want the belt in contact with the platen or as close as possible without touching? to get a good 90degree (without modifying my rest) i need to put the top of the platen out more than the default angle of the belt. this makes belt contact 100% of the time. i'm assuming this is ok and actually desirable when pressure grinding?

2. belt tracking (kinda): there is a slight wobble (left to right) that happens with my belt. it doesn't stay exactly true. granted it's happening at very high speeds and hard to see once it really gets going. it's much more noticeable to the human eye when the belt starts or stops. is this a bent bearing or axle or pivot or whatever? is this normal? i'm thinking this is going to be hard to get tits on plunge lines this way. Any suggestions for a fix?

this is the second grinder i've gotten my mitts on, the first had a cracked grinding wheel. a return at this point might be interesting as i've already made some mods by flat grinding the platen and cutting one of the rest arms off.

thanks in advance for any input.

You do want the belt contacting the entire platen that way your flat grind is flat and not convex. As far as the belt wobble, it will make the plunge a little more difficult to keep crisp. Make sure your wheels are not out of round. It also could be the belt. Try another one.

I don't try to form my plunge lines with my Craftsman, some belts wobble more that others, but I've found it much better to establish my plunge lines with a file and not the edge of the belt. See videos below for how I do it.

is it just one belt or all of them?

From time to time I get a wobbly belt and I send them back and get them replaced

i've tried the only 2 belts i have and they both seem to wobble a bit.

thanks for the links to the plunge vids!
