First- where does one get a stamp for a makers mark made?

Second- buddy of mine wants me to make a puukko knife. What are the pros and cons for or against heat treating first THEN putting on my Scandi grind? I know not to ruin the temper by over heating. It's a pretty small blade- 3" or so. Thanks, Phil

Here's a link for a makers mark though there are several http://steelhandstamps.com

The drawback of bevels post heat treat I would think is the hardness of the steel at that point. It will be more rough on your abrasives. It's not as mailable.

Grinding the whole thing after HT will take forever and be very tough on your belts.

There are a few places out there that make tang stamps and I found a lady on face book that makes them for a really great price. I will look up her contact info.

As to grinding after heat treat it all depends on what equipment you have. All my thin kitchen knives and fillet knives get ground after heat treating. But that being said the only reason I do so is because the blade stock is so thin to start with. But I would not think a puukko would be that thin. Are you going to chisel grind the blade, only have an edge bevel on one side? If so you can run into problems doing that after heat treat. The blade will bow away from the grind area and if you don't remove the same amount of steel from the other side then the bow will stay there. It's all about even stress in the steel, you remove "grind" stress away from one side and the blade will bend twords the Side with the most stress. Now this does not happen all the time but it's something to keep in mind when planning out your blade processes.

Thank you all for the responses. Reason I asked is I see that one guy Crashblades on YouTube do a lot of post heat treat grinding. I have an esteem grinder.

That being said I do grind after heat treat but it's as little as possible and just to remove decarbe and finish surface.
