Couple quick questions on micarta/g10

Okay first up--I've only ever worked with G10 on flat scales for folders where minimal rounding was required, and so easily done with sandpaper. I'm wondering about shaping it for larger handles. I've often used my wood router for micarta in the past, especially for cutting the tang channels for mortis construction setups; have to go very slow and it tends to work better if I do multiple runs at steadily increasing depths instead of trying to hog out 3/16" X 5/8" (or whatever) all at once, but it's doable. Basically, wondering if the glass fibers in G10 are so much tougher that it shouldn't get anywhere near the router, or if it's worth a try.

Also, where is a good source for 1" to 1.5" diameter micarta rods. I can sometimes find them at Blade but I'm not going to be able to go this year.

Thanks,
Warren

Ask the makers named in my for sale thread, the pictures are knives made with "Margarita Green" as named by Kerry Hampton. I have only been able to cut it with a wet tile saw, but these guys have worked it well.

Slow, small bites. Too fast on my Grizz and it actually burns and smolders. Not a good smell and really screws up the finish also :D

Since G10 really does a number on saw blades I would venture to say that the same applies to router bits. When I was working G10 on my 4x36 I would dip the piece in water after a few sec on the belt and work slowly so the stuff would not burn.

I was having a problem cutting today too, the G10 started burning. The stuff is resistant. I ended up drilling lots of holes then cutting between the holes, much easier.

I was wondering about a different tool. You know the bits that they put on dremel tools to remove grout, sort of a drill bit that can cut sideways. Can I mount one of those on a drill press and use it as sort of a saw to cut material and get nice contours???

I have another question about G10, is it strong enough that you dont need liners for a folder? Im replacing the plastic handles on my endura with orange g10, just dont know if the g10 will hold onto everything just fine or I need the liners?

IMO, yes, it would be fine without liners as long as you have a decent inset for the stop pin and such.

OK - I have done a frame lock with one side all G10 no liner, Gerry McGinnis does several of his knives this way. With carbon fiber, the frame is definitely stiff enough, with G10 you will get some flex in the frame, especially if it is long. I agree that any stop pin or standoff will need a decent shoulder to support it. Small holes that are relied on for support can start to wear, in my experience. After doing one large frame lock this way, I would not use G10 without a liner under it. The knife is fine, but I don't like the flex.
