Coyote SD Question

I'd recommend the pepper spray marked for dogs. Less percentage than the stuff for people, but it works on dogs, and is legal in Canada.
For a complementary folder, the Spyderco Chinook 3 should do the trick. Tough, stabby, cuts well, and quick deployment.

Just to add: don't get caught up in stab versus slash. Go for whatever presents itself.
Locking yourself into a predetermined plan of attack is setting yourself up for a fall.

is a longer collaspable baton an option?

Not according to any cops I've talked to; they all said they'd arrest someone for carrying one, even if they said it was for protection against dogs.

I was about to recommend a baton. Those things pack a punch. My friend carries one around with him its a 32 in baton. Packs a wallop! Id suggest a re-curved blade. But i think your best defense would be a firearm. But in the event you cant use one. Use a blade atleast 5 inches long. The further away from the coyote the better.

You could always take a good sturdy walking stick with you.

I'd go with the bear spray (works great on humans too) because you want to keep distance. Ever see a police dog tackle a suspect and beat him into submission? Wild dogs would prolly do worse.

This is one for prac tac BTW.

If it must be a knife, how do you think the Spyderco Civilian would do?

my dad put a tip on one end and a hand throng on a 4' jo, good height for a walking stick, red oak, it would do the job.

Millie or endura would be a good option too, anything pointy and around 4in would do. I would not advise you try and kick, you could loose your balance and it probably would not be too effective even if you did make contact.

Yes, kicking the dog will only give up your ankle in his jaws. If you choose the Endura, get a waved Endura. My video will show the advantage of carrying a waved knife.

The Civilian might not do so well, but then again I have no idea.

Big walking stick would be my choice after a big can of pepper spray.

Stick is prolly the best way to go, backed up by a fixed blade or a waved folder. If you can get the dog to latch onto the stick, you can stab or kick to your heart's content.

Seeing as you are from Toronto, my recommendation is to take a trip to S and R knives at the Woodbine Center. They have all kinds of tactical folders that will fit the bill. My recommendation would be either a Benchmade 710 or a Spyderco Military. Not because they are particularly good self defence weapons, but because they are fantastic tools that carry particularly well for large folders. As far as Coyotes go, we have alot of them in the Niagara area as well. I routinely hike in woodlots etc in the area and have seen many, many Coyotes, some as close at 10 meters. All have hightailed it as soon as they have seen me. Coyotes are predators by nature, but most are looking for an easy meal, not a 200lb man with a 75 lb dog at his side. Most are content to hunt mice, rabbits, and the odd bird, I've even been out walking with my 2 kids, 4 and 6 and seen a pair eating windfall apples. Both spooked out when we closed the gap to 100 meters. If you are really nervous though, carry a stout walking stick and use the knife as a last ditch weapon.

My first thought was to recommend the heel of your boot and some big girl panties, but not too long ago a young woman was mauled to death by two coyotes in Nova Scotia...

There's the news story. Serious business. Not to be an alarmist, but I'd say your worries are pretty justified. I'd also say that a big honkin' stick or some bear spray would probably serve you better than a knife, and would also draw less legal flak.

If you are walking trails with your dog out of the city limits take a big sheath knife. Bowie or something of that sort. Maybe even something non theatening like a Leuku from Ragnar, that is if you want carry a knife for s.d. against coyote's. Myself I would take a very nice walking stick that is about shoulder height with a nice grip on it and a lanyard. Bear spray would also be with me if I was concerned about coyote's attacking my dog etc.etc. But then again I live in NYS and have a ccw so it is a moot point unless in a state or county park. keepem sharp

PS I just wouldn't carry a folder if it were me for use against a dog/coyote. Bear spray I would think would work way better.

the knife puts you too close to the teeth. big stick pointed & fire hardened is better or a sword cane from cold steel or even better a sword cane from berger in s. africa.
